What makes a quiz question good

good quiz questions test one idea, use wrong answers that look plausible to someone who has not studied, and avoid giving the answer away in the wording.

  • Test one idea per question instead of two facts joined by "and".
  • Build wrong answers from common mistakes so they are plausible.
  • Avoid absolute words like "always" or "never" unless they are true.
  • Write an explanation for every answer so the wrong choices teach something.
Example biology quiz questions with answers
Which organelle is the main site of ATP production in most eukaryotic cells? The mitochondrion. It carries out cellular respiration, which produces most of the cell's ATP.
True or false: both plant and animal cells have a rigid cell wall.False. Only plant cells have a cell wall made of cellulose, which gives them structural support.
Why does a cell membrane need to be selectively permeable? It lets needed molecules in and keeps others out, which helps the cell maintain stable internal conditions.
In a hypertonic solution, which way does water move across a cell membrane?Out of the cell. Water moves toward the side with more dissolved solute, so the cell loses water.
What is the role of ribosomes in a cell? They build proteins by translating messenger RNA into chains of amino acids.

Three question formats

Choose multiple choice, true/false or short answer, depending on whether you are checking recall or testing whether you can explain an idea.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes a short explanation, so a wrong answer teaches you something instead of just marking you wrong.

Built from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain-text notes or photos of pages, and the questions stay tied to the content you are studying.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, set of notes or a photo of a page.

Pick question types

Select multiple choice, true/false or short answer for the topic you are reviewing.

Study and export

Practice in the browser on the free plan. Paid plans can export to PDF or DOCX, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML.

A useful check is whether a question asks you to recall something or apply it. A definition question is a fair start, but asking how a change would affect a result gives you more practice with what you actually need to know.

Frequently asked questions

How many quiz questions should I write for one topic?

Start with about 10 to 15 questions per topic, mixing recall and application. Add more on the parts you keep missing, since repeated retrieval is what builds memory.

Should quiz questions be multiple choice or short answer?

Use multiple choice for quick checks and short answer when you need to see whether you can explain an idea in your own words. Mixing both gives a more accurate picture of what you know.

Is DeckOwl free to use?
