How pub quiz questions are built, and how to write your own

Most pub quizzes run in rounds grouped by theme, with pub quiz questions that have one clear, checkable answer, such as a capital city, a film year or a chemical symbol. The best ones are easy to read aloud, hard to guess, and spread across history, geography, science, music and popular culture.

  • Each question has one answer that can be checked against a source.
  • Mix categories so no single team dominates a round.
  • Write a short reason beside each answer for the scorekeeper.
  • Vary difficulty, with a few easy openers and a harder final round.
Example general knowledge trivia questions

True or false: honey never spoils.True. Its low water content and acidic pH stop most microbes from growing.
What is the capital of Australia?Canberra. It was chosen as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne.
Who wrote the novel 1984?George Orwell. He published it in 1949 as a dystopian story about state surveillance.
How many bones are in the adult human body?206. Babies have more, and some bones fuse as the body grows.

Questions from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of a page and get questions drawn from that content.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with a short explanation, so the answer key teaches the reason behind the answer as well as the answer itself.

Export when you upgrade

Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export. Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for quizzes in a learning system.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of pages. Text in images is read with recognition.

Choose a question type

Pick multiple choice, true or false, or short answer questions for your round.

Review and run the quiz

Check each question, edit anything unclear, then run the quiz in your browser.

If you host a quiz, you can write those questions from scratch, but it is faster to start from material you already have. Lecture slides, a book chapter or your own study notes can become a round that covers exactly what your group should know.

DeckOwl can do this in a few minutes: upload the source, choose multiple choice, true or false, or short answer, and review each question before the quiz. The free plan includes 3 generations per month with study in the browser, and Plus removes the limit and adds exports.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good pub quiz question?

A good question has one unambiguous answer, reads clearly aloud, and avoids trick wording. Aim for a mix of easy and hard prompts so most teams can score at least a few points.

How many questions should a pub quiz round have?

Many hosts keep a round to about ten questions so it finishes in around fifteen minutes. Adjust the count for your crowd and how long you want the night to run.

Can I export pub quiz questions from DeckOwl?

Yes, on paid plans. Plus exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No, you can start on the free plan without a credit card. Students get 40% off with a school email.
