Fix an Anki deck that only shows 20 cards

In most cases the cap is a daily new-card setting, not missing material. Change it in Anki's deck options, or turn your own PDFs, slides, notes or images into flashcards with DeckOwl and export them to Anki on Plus.

Why your Anki deck stops at 20 cards

When Anki decks that only show 20 cards turn up, the cause is usually a daily limit rather than missing material. Anki's default New cards/day setting is 20, so once that many new cards have been introduced, the rest wait until the next day.

  • Anki's default is 20 new cards per day for each deck.
  • Raise New cards/day in deck options to see more new cards.
  • Maximum reviews/day is a separate limit, defaulting to 200.
  • Plus includes unlimited generations and export to Anki.
Example Anki deck settings flashcards
What is the default New cards/day setting in Anki?20 new cards per day, so a deck stops offering new cards after that many until the next day.
Where do you change the daily new card limit in Anki?Deck options, under the Daily Limits section, in the New cards/day field.
What does Maximum reviews/day control in Anki? How many review cards appear per day, separate from new cards, with a default of 200.
Why might an Anki deck show fewer cards than expected?Cards that are not yet due are hidden, and a daily limit on the deck or a parent deck can cap what appears.
Does raising the new card limit change how each card is scheduled? No, it only changes how many new cards appear each day, while each card's review interval stays the same.

How it works

Open deck options

In Anki, click the gear icon next to the deck and choose Options.

Raise New cards/day

Under Daily Limits, increase New cards/day to a number you can keep up with.

Or generate a fresh deck

Upload your own material to DeckOwl and export the flashcards to Anki on Plus.

Review limits work separately and default to 200 reviews per day. If you raise new cards, keep an eye on the review queue so it stays manageable, and add cards in steady batches as you go.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Anki deck show only 20 new cards?

Anki's default New cards/day setting is 20, so the deck stops offering new cards after that many for the day. Cards that are not yet due stay hidden until their review date.

How many new flashcards should I study each day?

Many learners find 10 to 30 new cards a day workable, depending on time and difficulty. Raise the limit gradually so reviews do not pile up.

Can I export DeckOwl flashcards to Anki?

Yes, export to Anki is included with Plus, which is $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Are DeckOwl flashcards scheduled with spaced repetition?
