Why Anki images disappear and what to do

Most cases of Anki deck images not showing come down to a file that Anki cannot find. The card stores a reference to a filename, and if that file is missing from the media folder or the name differs by one character, the image stays blank even though the text loads.

The image filename in the card has different capitalization, spaces or an altered extension.
The media folder is in a different location from the profile the deck is open in.
Images were added on one device but sync did not transfer the media files.
The deck was imported without its media files, so the tags point to nothing.

Confirm the image file sits in the collection's media folder and that its filename matches the image tag exactly, including capital letters and spaces.

How it works

Inspect the card

Open the card in Anki's editor and compare the image tag's filename with the file in the media folder. Fix any spelling, case or extension differences.
