How image-based study cards work

Photos of a textbook page or lecture slide are often the quickest way to start a deck, and image-based Anki flashcards can be generated straight from them. DeckOwl reads the text in each picture with text recognition, then turns the key terms, definitions and processes into question-and-answer cards.

  • Photograph pages straight on with even lighting so the text reads cleanly.
  • Keep one fact per card, such as a definition, a rule or one step of a process.
  • Review generated cards for accuracy before you start studying from them.
  • Export to Anki on Plus once your deck is ready to move into your Anki collection.
Example DNA and genetics flashcards from images
What is the base-pairing rule in DNA?Adenine pairs with thymine, and guanine pairs with cytosine.
What is the difference between a gene and an allele?A gene is a segment of DNA that codes for a trait, while an allele is one of several variant forms of that gene.
What does Mendel's law of segregation state? Each parent passes one of its two alleles to each offspring at random, so a gamete carries only one allele per gene.
Where does transcription take place in a eukaryotic cell?In the nucleus, where RNA polymerase copies a DNA template into messenger RNA.
What is a codon?A sequence of three nucleotides in mRNA that specifies one amino acid or a stop signal.

Read from photos

Upload a picture of a page or slide and the text is pulled out with text recognition, so you don't have to retype anything.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards are scheduled for review at growing intervals, so you spend time on the facts you are about to forget.

Export when you need it

Plus includes Anki export, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV, so your deck can move into the tools you already use.

How it works

Upload your images

Add photos of pages, slides or notes alongside any PDFs, DOCX files or plain text you have.

Review the generated cards

Check the flashcards DeckOwl creates, edit anything that is unclear, and remove duplicates.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki on Plus and keep reviewing on your schedule.

Clear, well-lit photos give the best results. Check each card against the source before you rely on it, and merge or delete any that repeat the same fact. Single-fact cards are easier to recall and schedule well with spaced repetition.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make from one DNA and genetics chapter?

Aim for one card per distinct fact, such as a definition, a rule or a process step. A typical chapter produces a few dozen useful cards, and you can cut any that repeat the same idea.

Is it better to study single facts or longer summaries on cards?

Single-fact cards work better with spaced repetition because each review tests one thing you can recall clearly. Keep longer summaries for a separate reading pass.

Does DeckOwl read the text in photos?

Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so sharp, well-lit images give the most accurate cards.

Can I export image-based flashcards to Anki?

Yes, on the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month, which includes Anki export. The free plan gives you 3 generations per month and browser study, but no exports.
