Why build your own Japanese Anki deck

Shared decks of Japanese Anki flashcards are easy to find, but they rarely match the chapter your class is on or the kanji on your own worksheet.

  • Upload a photo of a textbook page and text recognition reads the printed text.
  • Spaced repetition schedules reviews so the vocabulary you forget comes back sooner.
  • The free plan includes 3 generations per month, studied in the browser.
  • Plus adds unlimited generations and Anki, PDF, DOCX and CSV export.
Example Japanese vocabulary flashcards

Which particle marks the direct object of a verb?を (o), as in 水を飲む (mizu o nomu, to drink water), because it shows what receives the action.
What are the two kana syllabaries called?Hiragana and katakana. Hiragana is used for native words and grammar, while katakana is used for loanwords and foreign names.
What does 行きます (ikimasu) mean?To go, in the polite form. The plain dictionary form is 行く (iku).

Built from your material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or photos of pages. Text in photos is read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back at the intervals your memory needs, so the kanji you keep missing show up more often.

Anki export

The Plus plan exports to Anki, plus PDF, DOCX and CSV, so your Japanese deck can live where you already study.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a textbook chapter, a class handout or a photo of your vocab sheet.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl turns the content into flashcards. Check them and edit anything that looks off.

Study or export

Review in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki on Plus.

Generating cards from your own material keeps the deck aligned with what you will actually be tested on. Vocabulary, kana and grammar patterns from your notes become cards you can review on a schedule.

When the deck is ready, export it to Anki on the Plus plan and keep reviewing in the app you already use.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for a Japanese vocabulary unit?

Most units work well with 20 to 40 cards. Group vocabulary by theme so each review session stays short and focused.

How should I study kanji with flashcards?

Make one card per kanji with its readings on the back, then add cards for common compound words that use it. Review daily in short sessions so spaced repetition can space them out.

Can DeckOwl export my cards to Anki?

Yes, export to Anki is part of the Plus plan, which costs $39 per year or $7.99 per month. Students with a school email get 40% off, and you do not need a credit card to start.

Is there a free plan?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but exports require a paid plan.
