Turn your notes into reverse Anki flashcards with AI
Upload a PDF, slide deck, set of notes or a photo of a page. DeckOwl builds flashcards you can study in the browser with spaced repetition, and Plus lets you export them to Anki.
Why two-way cards beat one-way cards
A one-way card only tests recognition, so you can pass it by spotting the answer when you see it. Reverse Anki flashcards ask for the term from the meaning as well as the meaning from the term, which is closer to what you need on an exam or in a conversation.
- Test a term from its meaning and the meaning from the term.
- Start from your own notes, slides or textbook pages instead of a generic list.
- Review the cards before you study so errors do not stay in your deck.
- Export to Anki on Plus if you already study there.
Cards for both directions
Build the prompt and the answer into a pair of cards so you can recall a term and produce it from its meaning.
Spaced repetition
Reviews are spaced by how well you remember each card, so weak cards come back sooner and strong ones less often.
Any source you already have
Start from PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or a photo of a page instead of retyping your material by hand.
How it works
Upload your material
Add the PDF, slides, notes or image you are studying from. Text in photos is read with text recognition.
Review the flashcards
Check the generated cards, edit anything that needs fixing, and keep only the ones you want to learn.
Study or export
Study in the browser on the free plan, or upgrade to Plus to export to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV.
Building both directions by hand takes time, especially for long vocabulary lists or dense lecture slides. DeckOwl starts from your own material, so the cards match what your course actually covers, and spaced repetition handles the scheduling once they are in your deck.

Frequently asked questions
How many reverse flashcards should I make for a vocabulary list?
Most learners start with one reverse pair per term and add more only when a word keeps slipping. A 50-word list becomes 100 cards, which fits into a few short daily sessions.
Is it better to study vocabulary in both directions?
Testing both ways helps you recall a word when you need to produce it, not just recognize it. Spaced repetition then brings back the cards you miss more often, so the harder direction gets extra practice.
Can I export reverse cards to Anki?
Yes, on the Plus plan, which also includes PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.
Is there a free way to try it before paying?
The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, with no credit card needed to start. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
