How to build a Japanese study deck you will actually review

Japanese vocabulary fades fast if you only read it once, which is why many learners pair Anki flashcards to learn Japanese with spaced repetition. Paste in a textbook chapter, a vocab PDF or photos of handwritten kana charts, and DeckOwl turns them into cards you review on a schedule.

  • Start with kana: hiragana and katakana are the base for reading every other card.
  • Keep each card to one word, one reading or one grammar point so reviews stay quick.
  • Put the reading and an example sentence on the back, not just the English meaning.
  • Add a few new cards a day rather than a large batch you will not get to.
Example Japanese vocabulary and grammar flashcards
食べる (taberu): what does it mean?To eat. It is an ichidan (ru) verb, so the polite form drops the る and adds ます: 食べます.
In 私は学生です, what does は mark? The topic of the sentence. It is written as ha but pronounced wa.
Kanji 日: common readings and meaning?Sun or day. Read as ひ alone or にち in compounds such as 日曜日 (Sunday).
How do you politely say thank you?ありがとうございます (arigatou gozaimasu). It is the polite form of ありがとう.
What sound does the hiragana か make?Ka, as in かさ (kasa, umbrella). It is one of the first kana to memorize.

Frequently asked questions

How many new flashcards should I add per day when learning Japanese?

Many learners start with 10 to 20 new cards a day and adjust based on how many reviews they can keep up with. Consistency matters more than volume.

Should I learn kana before making vocabulary flashcards?

Yes, it helps. Hiragana and katakana are the foundation, so a few days on the kana charts makes vocabulary cards easier to read and remember.

Can I export these flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included on the Plus plan, which costs $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Is there a free plan to try it?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and you can start without a credit card. Students get 40% off with a school email.
