Why inorganic chemistry suits flashcards

Inorganic chemistry on the AQA A-Level course asks you to remember trends, flame colors, precipitate colors and reaction equations that rarely make sense until they have been repeated. Upload your own spec notes or slides and DeckOwl builds AQA A-Level chemistry inorganic flashcards from them, so the cards reflect your teacher's wording and your course.

  • Periodic trends in ionization energy, atomic radius and melting point across Periods 2 and 3
  • Group 2 reactions with water, oxygen and dilute acids, and the thermal stability of carbonates
  • Halogen displacement reactions, halide tests with silver nitrate and the colors of precipitates
  • Transition metal complexes, oxidation states and ligand substitution reactions
Example AQA A-Level inorganic chemistry flashcards
Why does first ionization energy generally decrease down Group 2?Each element adds a shell of electrons, so the outer electrons are further from the nucleus and better shielded, which makes them easier to remove.
Why does the thermal stability of Group 2 carbonates increase down the group? The larger cations have lower charge density, so they polarize the carbonate ion less and it decomposes at a higher temperature.
What causes transition metal complexes to be colored?Ligands split the d orbitals, and electrons absorb particular wavelengths of visible light to move between them, so the color seen is the complementary color of the light absorbed.
What is the oxidation state of manganese in MnO4-?+7. Each oxygen is -2, so the four oxygens contribute -8, and the overall charge of -1 means manganese must be +7.
What precipitate forms when silver nitrate is added to chloride ions?White silver chloride. Dilute nitric acid is added first to remove carbonate ions, which would also form a precipitate and confuse the test.

Built from your own material

Upload PDFs, PowerPoint slides, DOCX files, plain notes or photos of pages. Cards follow the topics in your course, not a generic chemistry deck.

Spaced repetition

Cards you find difficult return sooner, and easy ones spread out, so reviewing for AQA papers stays manageable across weeks.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Turn the same notes into multiple choice, true or false and short answer questions with explanations, or map out how reactions and trends connect.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slides, a document or photos of your notes. Images are read with text recognition.

Review the generated cards

Check the flashcards DeckOwl creates, edit anything that does not match your spec wording, and keep the ones you want.

Study with spacing

Work through the deck in the browser on the free plan, and let spaced repetition set when each card returns.

Good inorganic revision usually means short prompts with precise answers: state the trend, give the reason, and name the observation. Cards that ask for the reason as well as the fact help you practice the explanations examiners look for, rather than memorizing a list.

Once the deck exists, spaced repetition brings back the cards you miss, so the periodic trends and test results you struggle with get more practice before the exam. Export to Anki or CSV is available on paid plans if you already keep decks elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for AQA A-Level inorganic chemistry?

Most students find that a focused deck of 80 to 150 cards, split by topic such as Group 2, halogens and transition metals, is easier to review than one huge deck. Add cards as you finish each part of the specification.

What is the best way to memorize flame test colors and precipitate colors?

Write the observation on the front and the reason on the back, such as the metal ion emitting light at a specific wavelength when electrons drop back to lower energy levels. Review these cards in short sessions so the associations stick.

Can I use DeckOwl for free?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. Exports such as PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are part of the paid Plus plan.

Does DeckOwl include spaced repetition on the free plan?

Spaced repetition is a Plus feature, priced at $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month, and students with a school email get 40 percent off. No credit card is needed to start.
