Build phrase cards from the material you already have

Ready-made decks of Chinese phrases flashcards can help, but they rarely match the lesson you are taking this week. If your teacher hands out a vocabulary list or slides, a generated deck will follow that exact material. Upload the file and DeckOwl builds cards from the phrases your course actually uses.

  • Upload textbook photos, slides, DOCX or PDF files
  • Keep characters, pinyin and meaning together on each card
  • Review the most difficult phrases more often with spaced repetition
  • Export to Anki or CSV on the Plus plan

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and the ones you know move further apart so daily review stays short.

Study anywhere

The free plan lets you study in the browser. Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export for printing or other apps.

How it works

Upload your material

Add your phrase list, lesson slides, or a photo of the textbook page you are studying.

Check the cards

Review the generated flashcards and edit any phrase, pinyin or translation that does not match your class.

Review daily

Study a few minutes each day. Spaced repetition schedules the phrases you struggle with more often.

Organize phrases by situation, such as greetings, ordering food, asking for directions or shopping. Keep each deck small enough to review in about ten minutes a day, and add new cards as your lessons move on. Spaced repetition brings back the phrases you miss more often until they stick.

Frequently asked questions

How many phrases should go in one Chinese phrases flashcard deck?

Most beginners do well with 20 to 40 phrases per deck, grouped by situation such as greetings or directions. Smaller decks are easier to finish each day with spaced repetition.

Should I learn characters or only pinyin first?

Start with pinyin so you can say the phrases aloud, then add characters as you recognize them. Put the characters on one side and pinyin with the meaning on the other so you practice both.

Can I export these flashcards to Anki?

Yes, export to Anki is included in the Plus plan, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser without exporting them.

Is there a free plan, and do students get a discount?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
