Why generate your own stroke order cards

Stroke order drills work best when the cards match the characters on your own list, not a generic sheet. Upload textbook pages, teacher slides or handwritten notes, and the AI pulls out each character with its stroke count and order to make Chinese stroke order flashcards you can review on a spacing schedule.

  • Front shows the character, back shows stroke count and order
  • Spaced repetition brings back strokes you miss
  • Works from PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text notes or photos of pages
  • Study in the browser on the free plan; exports are on Plus
Example Chinese stroke order flashcards
How many strokes does 人 (rén, person) have?2: a left-falling stroke (撇) first, then a right-falling stroke (捺).
How many strokes does 十 (shí, ten) have?2: the horizontal stroke is written first, then the vertical stroke.
How many strokes does 大 (dà, big) have?3: horizontal first, then the left-falling stroke (撇), then the right-falling stroke (捺).
How many strokes does 木 (mù, tree) have?4: horizontal, left-falling, vertical, then right-falling.
When a left-falling and a right-falling stroke meet, which comes first? The left-falling stroke (撇) comes first, as in 人, so the right-falling stroke (捺) is written second.

Cards from your own characters

The cards use the characters in your textbook, slides or notes, so you never study a generic list that skips your course material.

Stroke count and order on the back

Each card can show the character on the front and its stroke count and writing order on the back for quick self-checks.

Spaced repetition

Characters you miss come back sooner, so the stroke order you struggle with gets more review time.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, PPTX, DOCX, text notes, or a photo of a page with characters.

Generate your cards

The AI reads the text, including photos through text recognition, and drafts flashcards from it.

Review on a schedule

Spaced repetition shows the hardest characters more often until their stroke order sticks.

Printable stroke charts exist, but they cannot show the specific characters your course adds each week. A custom set built from your material keeps the list accurate and the review focused on what you actually need to learn.

Start with a few pages, check the cards against your teacher's order, and then add more material as the course moves on.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters should I learn per week when starting Chinese?

Many beginners do well with a small batch of new characters each week, reviewed daily, so the stroke order is practiced before you add more. Start with simple characters with two to four strokes and build from there.

What are the basic stroke order rules in Chinese characters?

Generally, write from top to bottom and from left to right, and write horizontal strokes before vertical ones when they cross. Left-falling strokes usually come before right-falling strokes, but there are exceptions, so check each character.

Can I export my Chinese stroke flashcards?

Exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are part of the Plus plan, which costs $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month. The free plan lets you study your flashcards in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, which includes 3 generations per month.
