How tone flashcards train your ear

Mandarin has four main tones plus a neutral tone, and the syllable ma changes meaning with each one: mother, hemp, horse, scold. Strong chinese tone flashcards pair the character or pinyin with its tone mark on the front and a sound description and example word on the back, so you practice recognizing tone instead of memorizing a list.

  • Start with one syllable family, such as ma, ba or shi, before adding more.
  • Drill second and third tone side by side, since beginners often mix them up.
  • Say each card aloud so you hear the tone as well as read the mark.
  • Review new cards daily for a few minutes instead of one long weekly session.
Example Mandarin tone flashcards
Tone of mā (妈)?First tone, high and level, meaning mother.
Tone of má (麻)?Second tone, rising like a question, meaning hemp.
Tone of mǎ (马)?Third tone, falling then rising, meaning horse.
Tone of mà (骂)?Fourth tone, sharp and falling, meaning to scold.
Tone of ma in 吗, the question particle?Neutral tone, short and unstressed, turning a statement into a yes-or-no question.

Cards from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or a photo of a pinyin chart, and DeckOwl reads the text and builds flashcards from it.

Spaced repetition

Tones you miss most often come back more frequently, so the confusable pairs get the extra practice they need.

Study anywhere

Practice in your browser on the free plan, or export to Anki or CSV on Plus when you want to study on your phone.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slide deck, document or photo of your tone chart or vocabulary list.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl creates flashcards with the character or pinyin on the front and the tone, meaning and example on the back.

Review on a schedule

Study each day and let spaced repetition bring back the tones you find hardest to hear.

DeckOwl reads your own material, such as vocabulary slides, a pinyin chart PDF or a photo of a textbook page, and generates cards from it. Spaced repetition brings back the tones you miss most, which helps with confusable pairs like second and third tone. Exporting to Anki or CSV is available on the Plus plan.

Frequently asked questions

How many tone flashcards should I make at once?

Start with about 20 to 30 cards built around the four tones on a few syllables, such as ma, ba and shi. Add new syllables once you can identify the tone quickly and consistently.

Which Mandarin tones are hardest to tell apart?

Beginners most often confuse the second tone (rising) with the third tone (dipping), especially in fast speech where the dip can sound like a fall. Drilling them as a pair helps you hear the contrast rather than each tone in isolation.

Can I export my tone flashcards?

Yes, but exports are a paid feature. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, while the free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No, you can start on the free plan without a credit card. Students can get 40% off Plus with a school email.
