Moving an Anki deck to Quizlet takes a few extra steps

Most people moving between decks hit the same wall: Anki saves its decks as .apkg files, and Quizlet does not import those directly. The usual workaround for converting Anki flashcards to Quizlet is to export the deck as plain text from Anki, then paste the term and definition pairs into Quizlet's import box, which accepts a tab between the two sides.

  • Anki exports as plain text can be pasted into Quizlet, but formatting and images often do not carry over.
  • Rebuilding cards from the source material can catch errors that were copied into an old deck.
  • The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, with no exports.
  • Plus includes unlimited generations and PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export for $99.90/year or $9.99/month.

Cards from your own material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of a page and get flashcards drawn from that exact content.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards come back on a schedule based on how well you recall them, so you review what you are about to forget.

Export to Anki or CSV

Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, so your cards can leave DeckOwl in a format other apps can read.

How it works

Upload your source

Add the file or photo you studied from. No credit card is needed to start.

Review the flashcards

Check the generated question and answer pairs and keep, edit or remove any card.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki or CSV on Plus.

That works for small decks, but it breaks when cards have formatting, images or cloze deletions, and it copies your old wording along with any mistakes in it. If you are rebuilding a set anyway, it often makes more sense to start from the original lecture slides or textbook chapter.

DeckOwl takes that route. Upload your PDF, slides, notes or a photo of the page, and it generates flashcards with spaced repetition. Plus ($99.90/year or $9.99/month) adds Anki and CSV export, so the cards can move on to other tools.

Frequently asked questions

Can DeckOwl import my Anki deck or Quizlet set?

DeckOwl creates flashcards from PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text and images you upload. It does not list an Anki or Quizlet import, so you would start from your source material instead.

How many flashcards should I make for a general biology unit?

Aim for one card per distinct fact, term or process, which often means 30 to 80 cards for a single chapter. Split long chapters into sections so each batch stays manageable to review.

Which cards should I keep when rebuilding a deck?

Keep cards that test one idea each and that you got wrong recently. Remove cards with long answers, and rewrite any that ask two things at once.

Do I need to pay to export flashcards?

Yes. The free plan lets you study in the browser, while Plus at $99.90/year or $9.99/month includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.
