Turn your notes into a Moodle quiz in minutes
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page. DeckOwl writes multiple-choice, true/false and open questions with explanations, ready to bring into your Moodle course. No credit card needed to start.
From your notes to a Moodle quiz
Writing every question for a course quiz by hand takes hours, and most of that time goes to retyping what is already in your slides. If you want to know how to make a Moodle quiz without starting from a blank page, the faster route is to generate the questions from the material you already have and then bring them into Moodle.
- Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text or photographed pages as source material.
- Generate multiple choice, true/false or open questions with explanations.
- Review and edit each question before it goes into your course.
- Export Moodle XML on the Pro plan and import it through the question bank.
Questions from your own material
Upload lecture slides, a course reader or handwritten notes photographed on your phone. The questions come from what you actually taught, not generic textbook content.
Explanations on every answer
Each question includes a short explanation of why the correct option is right, so students get useful feedback when they review the quiz.
Moodle XML export
On the Pro plan, export your questions as Moodle XML and import them into your question bank in one step instead of typing each question by hand.
How it works
Upload your source
Add a PDF, Word file, slide deck, plain text notes or a photo of a page. Images are read with text recognition.
Choose question types
Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer questions and set how many you want from the material.
Export and import into Moodle
Download the Moodle XML file, then go to Question bank, choose Import, select Moodle XML and load the questions into your course.
Start by uploading the lecture slides, reading or notes the quiz should cover. Choose the question types you need, review the generated items for accuracy, and remove anything that goes beyond what you taught. Then create the quiz activity in your course and add the questions from your question bank.

Frequently asked questions
How do I import questions into Moodle?
Open your course, go to the question bank, choose Import, select the Moodle XML format and upload the file. Moodle then adds the questions to the bank so you can place them into any quiz in that course.
How many questions should a Moodle quiz have?
Most instructors use enough questions to cover each learning objective at least once, often 10 to 20 for a short quiz. Students usually do better on shorter quizzes that are frequent than on one long test.
Is Moodle XML export free?
No. Moodle XML export is part of the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and study in the browser, without exports.
Can I generate questions from photos of pages?
Yes. Photos of printed pages or whiteboards are read with text recognition, so you can turn them into questions the same way you would a PDF.
