Getting an AnkiWeb deck into Anki, and the alternative

Most people who need to import an Anki deck from AnkiWeb just want cards that match a course they are already taking. A shared deck can cover a different textbook edition or skip the topics your instructor emphasized.

  • Download the shared deck from AnkiWeb as an .apkg file before importing it into Anki desktop.
  • Check that the deck's topics match your course before relying on its cards.
  • Generate a custom set from your own PDFs or notes when no shared deck fits.
  • Export to Anki on the Plus plan if you want your DeckOwl cards in Anki.
Example Anki deck import questions
What file type does Anki use for a single shared deck?An .apkg package. In Anki desktop, open File, choose Import, and select the file.
What does a .colpkg file contain?A full Anki collection backup with all decks, scheduling and media. Importing it replaces your current collection, so back up first.
Why might images in an imported deck fail to show? The package was exported without its media files, so the image references point to files that are not included.
Should you review a shared AnkiWeb deck before studying it?Yes. Shared decks are written by other users and can contain errors, so check each card against your source material.
What happens to review history when you import an Anki deck?It depends on the export. If scheduling information was included, cards keep their history; otherwise they appear as new cards.

Cards from your own files

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text notes or a photo of a page and get flashcards matched to that material.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards are scheduled for review so you see harder material more often and easy material less often.

Anki export on Plus

The Plus plan exports to Anki, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV, so your cards can move into the app you already use.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slides, notes or an image of the pages you need to study.

Review the generated cards

Check the fronts and backs against your course material and edit anything that looks off.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki on Plus.

Generating cards from your own lecture slides or textbook chapter keeps the content aligned with what you will be tested on. Upload the file, review the cards, and study them with spaced repetition. Plus users can export the set to Anki.
