Why build your own Japanese deck

Most learners of Japanese already have vocabulary lists, kanji handouts and grammar notes, but turning them into Japanese flashcards for AnkiDroid by hand takes hours that could go to actual practice. Generating cards from your own material keeps the deck tied to the textbook or class you are following.

  • Upload a vocabulary list from class and get one card per word with its reading.
  • Photograph a page from your textbook and check the generated cards before studying.
  • Keep grammar patterns on separate cards so the particle or verb form is the question.
  • Export the finished deck to Anki on Plus and study it in AnkiDroid on your phone.

Built from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain notes, or photos of pages. Text is read from images, so handwritten-free printed lessons work too.

Spaced repetition scheduling

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know are spaced further apart, so you review what you are about to forget.

Export to Anki

Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, so your deck can move into AnkiDroid on your phone.

How it works

Add your material

Upload your Japanese vocabulary list, kanji sheet or grammar slides, or photograph a textbook page.

Generate and check the cards

Review the flashcards, fix any readings or translations you want changed, and keep the ones you need.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the Free plan, or export to Anki on Plus and review in AnkiDroid.

Good Japanese cards pair each word with its kanji, reading and an example sentence, and that is easier to get right when the source is your own lesson. Spaced repetition then handles the scheduling, so reviews stay manageable as the deck grows.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make per Japanese study session?

Many learners find 10 to 20 new cards a day manageable, adding more only once reviews feel under control. Spaced repetition brings older cards back at set intervals so repeats stay spread out.

Should I learn kanji readings or just vocabulary first?

Learn common vocabulary with its kanji and reading together so each card reinforces the others. Make single-kanji cards for characters you keep missing inside real words.

Can I export these cards to AnkiDroid?

Anki export is included in the Plus plan, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month. The Free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Is there a free plan?

Yes, the Free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study. No credit card is needed to start.
