Why generate your own phonics flashcards

A ready-made letter sound chart rarely matches the scheme your child or class is following, so phonics flashcards for letters and sounds work best when they come from the actual lesson. Upload the scheme of work or word lists you already use and DeckOwl produces cards for the letters, digraphs and example words in that material.

  • Start with the sounds taught this week, then add the next group once they are recalled reliably.
  • Keep cards to one sound each so the learner is not guessing between two answers.
  • Say the sound aloud on the front of the card before flipping it over.
  • Review the deck with the learner for a few minutes a day rather than one long session.
Example letter and sound phonics flashcards
What sound does the letter c make in cat?The hard /k/ sound. It makes a soft /s/ sound before e, i or y, as in city.
What sound do the letters sh make together? One sound, /sh/, as in ship. Two letters that make one sound are called a digraph.
What sound does ai make in rain? The long a sound, /ā/. The vowel team ai usually makes this sound in the middle of a word.
What is the short vowel sound for e?/ĕ/, as in bed. Short vowel sounds are often taught first, before long vowel teams.
What sound does th make in this? The voiced /th/ sound, made by placing the tongue between the teeth and using voice. In think it is the unvoiced /th/ instead.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of a worksheet. The flashcards cover the letters, digraphs and words that are actually in your lesson.

Spaced repetition

Cards the learner finds tricky come back more often, so letter-sound links stick without drilling the same easy cards every session.

Quizzes too

Turn the same material into short quizzes that check whether a child can match a letter to its sound or pick the right word from a list.

How it works

Upload your lesson

Add the phonics handout, word list or photo of a page. No credit card is needed to start.

Review the cards

Check the letter, digraph or sound on each card and remove anything your learner has not reached yet.

Study in the browser

Practice on any device. Free plan users get 3 generations per month, and paid plans add export to PDF or Anki.

Good phonics practice moves from single letter sounds to digraphs like sh and ch, then to vowel teams like ai and oa. Generating cards in stages, one set per sound group, keeps each deck focused and lets spaced repetition bring back the sounds a learner keeps mixing up.

Frequently asked questions

How many phonics cards should a child study at once?

Around 8 to 12 new letter or sound cards per session is a common starting point. Add new sounds only after the learner recalls the current set without hesitation.

What is a digraph, and should it get its own card?

A digraph is two letters that make one sound, such as sh in ship or ch in chin. Give each digraph its own card so the learner sees it as a single unit rather than two separate letters.

Can I export my phonics flashcards?

Export is a paid feature. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and the free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, and students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
