Why custom beats a generic printable set

Letter-sound practice works best when the cards match the exact order and wording your reader is learning. Upload your own scheme's word lists or a photo of a phonics chart, and DeckOwl builds printable phonics flashcards from that material. Free accounts get 3 generations per month to try it.

  • Sounds in the order your program teaches them
  • Digraphs and vowel teams in their own decks
  • Cards built from photos of your own charts, read with text recognition
  • Browser study on the free plan and PDF export on Plus
Example letter-sound flashcards for early readers
What sound does the letter m make?/m/, as in mop. Lips close and the sound hums through the nose.
What sound does the digraph sh make?/sh/, as in ship. The tongue sits near the roof of the mouth while air flows out.
What sound do the letters ai make together in a word like rain?/ay/. The two vowels work together to make one long vowel sound.
What does the silent e do in hope?It makes the vowel before it long, so o says its name, /oh/.
What sound does c make before e, i, or y?/s/, as in city. Before a, o, or u it makes /k/, as in cat.

Cards from your own pages

Upload PDFs, slides, notes or photos of worksheets. Text recognition reads the letters and words for you.

Spaced repetition

Letter-sound cards return at the intervals when you are most likely to forget them.

PDF export on Plus

Plus adds PDF export so you can print sets for small groups or home practice.

How it works

Upload your phonics material

Add a PDF, Word file, slide deck or a photo of a phonics chart.

Review the cards

Check the letter-sound pairs DeckOwl pulled out and edit any you want to change.

Study or print

Practice in the browser on the free plan, or export a printable PDF on Plus.

A generic download covers common sounds but cannot follow your class's sequence. Spaced repetition then brings back the pairs a child misses, so review time goes to the sounds that still need work.

Frequently asked questions

How many letter-sound pairs should a beginning reader learn at once?

Most phonics programs introduce a few new letter-sound pairs at a time and review earlier ones daily. Keep each deck to the pairs taught that week so practice matches the lesson.

Should I teach letter sounds or letter names first?

For decoding, teach the sound a letter makes, such as /m/, rather than its name. Have the child say the sound aloud while looking at the card.

Can I print my flashcards?

Printing needs a PDF file, and PDF export is included in the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study the cards in your browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, which includes 3 generations per month.
