Why generate your own alphabet cards

Teachers and parents often search for printable alphabet flashcards because a generic sheet rarely matches the letter sounds, fonts, or word lists a child is working on. Starting from your own material keeps the cards aligned with what is being taught.

  • Start from a letter chart, handout, or photo instead of a generic download
  • Keep each card to one letter or one sound so review stays focused
  • Use spaced repetition to revisit weaker letters more often
  • Export to PDF on Plus when a paper set is needed
Example alphabet flashcards for early readers
Which letter comes after D?E. Alphabet order runs A, B, C, D, E.
Sound of the letter B/b/ as in ball. Lips close, then release.
The five vowel letters in EnglishA, E, I, O, U. Y is sometimes a vowel too.
Letter that makes a hard /k/ sound but is not KC, as in cat. K also makes /k/, as in kite.
Last letter of the English alphabetZ. It is the 26th letter in order.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, a photo of a letter chart, or plain-text notes, and get flashcards that match how your class or child is learning.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and letters you know move to longer gaps, so review time goes to the letters that need it.

Export when you need paper

Free users study in the browser. Plus adds PDF and CSV export, so you can print a set once you have made it.

How it works

Upload your source

Add a PDF, slides, a document, or a photo of an alphabet poster. Text recognition reads printed letters.

Review the cards

DeckOwl proposes question and answer pairs, such as a letter and its sound or a letter and the one that follows it. Edit anything you want.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to PDF on Plus when you want a printable set.

A good set pairs each uppercase letter with its lowercase form, its most common sound, and one example word. DeckOwl can build those pairs from a worksheet or photo, and you can trim or add cards before you study.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters should a flashcard set cover at once?

Many early readers do well with 5 to 8 new letters per set, with earlier letters mixed in for review. Adding one card for the uppercase form, one for the lowercase form, and one for the sound keeps the set manageable.

How do I teach letter sounds with flashcards?

Put the letter on the front and the sound plus an example word on the back, such as /b/ as in ball. Say the sound aloud during review, and move cards you hesitate on into more frequent rounds.

Is there a free download of alphabet flashcards?

DeckOwl does not offer a ready-made alphabet download. The free plan lets you generate up to 3 sets per month and study them in the browser, and you can build a set from your own letter sheet.

Can I export my alphabet cards to PDF?

PDF export is part of the Plus plan, which costs $99.90 a year or $9.99 a month. Students get 40% off with a school email, and no credit card is needed to start on the free plan.
