How to get printable alphabet flashcards in English

A child learning to read does not need a generic sheet as much as one that matches the letters, sounds and picture words they are working on right now. Instead of hunting for a download, you can take your own letter list or classroom handout and create printable alphabet flashcards from it. Each card shows a letter on one side and a sound or example word on the other.

  • Works with PDFs, slides, notes and photos of printed pages
  • Front and back cards for letters, sounds and example words
  • Spaced repetition shows weak letters more often
  • Free plan studies in the browser; PDF export is on Plus
Example English alphabet flashcards for early readers
Letter A: what sound does it make in "cat"?The short a sound, /æ/, as in cat, hat and map.
Letter C: what two sounds can it make?A hard /k/ as in cat, and a soft /s/ before e, i or y, as in city.
Letter G: when does it make a soft sound? Before e, i or y, as in gem and giant; before a, o or u it is usually hard, as in go.
Letter Q: what letter almost always follows it?U, as in queen, so qu is usually pronounced /kw/.
Letter Y: when does it act as a vowel? At the end of a word or syllable with no other vowel, as in gym and happy.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters should a beginner flashcard set cover?

A basic set covers all 26 letters, usually in both uppercase and lowercase, with one picture word for each. Start with the letters a child is learning now, then add the rest in small batches.

How do I teach letter sounds with flashcards?

Show the letter and say its sound rather than its name, then show a word that starts with it. Spend more time on the letters that are missed most often.

Can I print DeckOwl flashcards?

PDF export is part of the Plus plan, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study generated cards in the browser, with 3 generations per month.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No, you can start on the free plan without a credit card. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
