Why build your own sight word cards

Printable sets often use words your child has not practiced yet, so many teachers and parents end up building their own. DeckOwl starts from the list you already have, and a photo of that list can become sight words flash cards with pictures you review in a few minutes a day.

  • Keep new words to three to five per session so practice stays manageable.
  • Say the word before showing the picture, then have the learner read it alone.
  • Put the word in a short sentence after the learner can read it on its own.
  • Review yesterday's words first, then add new ones.

Sight word 'look' with a picture of an eyeRead the word as one unit, say it while tracing the letters, then match it to the picture.
Why pair a sight word with a picture? The picture gives context, but the word should still be read as a whole shape rather than guessed from the picture.
Sight word 'said' after the picture is coveredFlash the word for two seconds, reveal it, then check the reading. Covering the picture stops guessing.

Start from your own list

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, note, or photo of a word card. Photos are read with text recognition, so a snapped page works.

Spaced repetition

Words you miss come back more often, and words you know move to longer gaps, so practice stays short.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month. No credit card is needed to start.

How it works

Upload your word list

Add a file or photo with the sight words you are working on.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl builds flashcards from the words in your material, ready to review.

Review a few words a day

Show the picture, say the word, then read it in a sentence. Spaced repetition brings back the ones that need work.

Keep each session to three to five new words, and reread the ones that slip. Pairing each word with a picture helps early readers connect the shape of the word to its meaning, but the word should still be read as a whole unit every time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I teach sight words with pictures?

Show the picture, have the child read the word without guessing from the picture, and then read it in a short sentence. Repeat a small set of three to five words a day.

Which sight word lists should I start with?

The Dolch pre-primer and primer lists and Fry's first hundred words are common starting points. If your school or reading program has its own list, use that one.

Can I make these cards from my own word list?

Yes. Upload a PDF, slide, note, or photo of your list and DeckOwl generates flashcards from the words in it, then schedules reviews with spaced repetition.

Can I export the cards to print or Anki?

PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV exports are included in the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month.
