Standard flashcard dimensions and when to use each

Knowing what size flashcards are standard helps you buy the right pack or set up a printed deck, and the most common answer is 3 by 5 inches (about 7.6 by 12.7 cm). That is the classic index card size, small enough to carry and large enough to write a short question on one side and its answer on the other.

  • Standard US index cards are 3 by 5 inches, the most common handwritten size.
  • 4 by 6 inch cards suit diagrams, formulas and longer answers.
  • Pocket cards around 2.5 by 3.5 inches are easy to carry but hold less text.
  • One idea per side keeps any size readable during review.

Larger 4 by 6 inch cards give more room for diagrams, longer definitions or formulas. Pocket cards around 2.5 by 3.5 inches match playing card size and suit quick review on the go, but leave less space for writing. Many schools outside the US use A6 (105 by 148 mm), which is close to 4 by 6 inches.

Whatever size you choose, keep one idea per side so the card stays readable. DeckOwl creates cards from your own material, so you can generate a full set and then print or export it in the size that fits your course.
