Where Canvas quiz responses go and how to study from them

Instructors often need to download Canvas quiz responses after a quiz closes, whether to grade, review items or spot topics the class found hard. Canvas provides these as CSV reports from the quiz statistics page, which open in any spreadsheet program.

  • Canvas Student Analysis lists each student's responses and score for a quiz.
  • Canvas Item Analysis shows how the class performed on each question.
  • DeckOwl generates quizzes from files you upload, not from Canvas data.
  • Free plan users can study quizzes in the browser; exports require a paid plan.
Example Canvas quiz response download questions
Which Canvas quiz report shows how the class performed on each individual question?Item Analysis. It reports the percent of students who answered each question correctly, which helps you spot questions that need review.
Which Canvas quiz report gives one row for each student with their responses and score?Student Analysis. It lists each student's answers and score, and it downloads as a CSV file for a spreadsheet.
What file type do Canvas quiz statistics reports download as?CSV. It is a plain-text spreadsheet format that opens in Excel, Google Sheets and similar programs.
Why might a downloaded quiz report show fewer rows than students enrolled in the course?Students who never submitted the quiz have no responses to report, so they do not appear in the Student Analysis rows.
Where do you start when looking for quiz statistics in Canvas?Open the course, select Quizzes, open the specific quiz, then choose the Quiz Statistics page. The download options appear there.

Works from your own files

Upload PDFs, DOCX files, PPTX slides, plain notes or photos of pages, and DeckOwl builds questions from that material.

Question types that match your course

Generate multiple choice, true/false or short answer questions, each with an explanation of why the answer is correct.

Export when you need it

Plus includes PDF and DOCX export. The Pro plan adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export for systems that accept those formats.

How it works

Download the Canvas reports

Open the quiz in your course, go to Quiz Statistics, and download the Student Analysis or Item Analysis CSV file.

Upload the material behind the quiz

Add the slides, readings or notes the quiz covered. DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, text and images.

Study the questions you missed

Generate a practice quiz, answer it, and read the explanations for the items that tripped students up.

DeckOwl does not connect to Canvas or read your gradebook. What it does is generate practice questions from the course material you upload, so students can rehearse the topics that the quiz results point to, and teachers can build review quizzes in a few minutes.
