What the results download can and cannot do

Teachers who need to download Canvas New Quizzes results usually want a spreadsheet of scores, question-level misses and item statistics to review after a class. That data lives in Canvas, so the export has to come from your Canvas gradebook or the quiz reports your institution makes available.

  • Check the gradebook export first for total scores by student.
  • Use item-level reports to find questions most students missed.
  • Look for questions where strong and weak students answered differently.
  • Build a short practice quiz from the topic that caused the most misses.
Example questions for reading quiz results
What does a low discrimination index on a quiz item suggest? The item may be confusing or miskeyed, since high scorers did not answer it correctly more often than low scorers.
What does a point-biserial correlation measure in item analysis? How well a question separates high-scoring students from low-scoring ones. Values near zero suggest the item is not working well.
Why review quiz results question by question instead of only by total score?Question-level data shows which concepts the class missed, so you can reteach that topic rather than the whole unit.
Why should you check the answer key before recalculating scores?A single miskeyed item can lower many students' totals, so confirm the correct answer against the source material first.
What is a CSV export useful for when reviewing quiz results? It opens in Excel or Google Sheets, where you can sort students, calculate averages and filter results by question.

Quizzes from your own files

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain-text notes or photos of pages and get practice questions built from that material.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes a short explanation, so students learn why the correct answer is right, not just which letter to pick.

LMS export on Pro

The Pro plan exports QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML files. Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slide deck, Word file, text notes or photos of pages.

Review the questions

Edit, remove or reword any item before you use the quiz.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export files on Plus or Pro.

DeckOwl works on the other side of that process. If you want a new quiz to replace or supplement one you have already reviewed, you can generate it from the lecture notes or readings it covers. The questions come with explanations, which helps students who missed an item understand the concept behind it.

If your results show that many students missed the same concept, a short practice quiz built from the relevant pages can give them a second attempt before the next assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can DeckOwl pull my students' scores from Canvas?

No. DeckOwl does not connect to Canvas, so it cannot download your class results. Use Canvas's own gradebook export or the reports your institution provides.

How do I read item analysis after a quiz?

Look for questions most students missed and for items where high scorers and low scorers answered differently. Those patterns often point to unclear wording or a wrong answer key.

How many quiz questions should I write per learning objective?

Five to ten questions per objective is a common starting point. That is usually enough to see patterns without making the quiz too long for students to finish.

Can I export a DeckOwl quiz to Canvas?

Yes, on the Pro plan, which includes QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export. Check that your Canvas import accepts the format before you upload the file.
