Turn your own notes into quiz questions you can download
Upload your PDFs, slides or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions with explanations, ready to export.
Build a question set from your own course material
Instructors who need a question bank quickly often start from their own lecture slides rather than a blank quiz form. DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, notes and photos of pages, then writes Canvas quiz questions in multiple-choice, true/false or short answer format, each with an explanation.
- Questions written from your own slides and notes, not a generic bank
- Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer formats in one set
- An explanation for every answer to support review
- PDF and DOCX export on Plus, QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML on Pro
Three question types
Get multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions in one set, each with an explanation for the correct answer.
Built from your material
Questions come from the PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, notes or page photos you upload, so the set matches what you actually taught.
Export when you need it
PDF and DOCX export are included on Plus. QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are on Pro for importing into your learning system.
How it works
Upload your material
Add a PDF, slide deck, document or set of notes for the topic you are teaching.
Choose types and count
Pick multiple-choice, true/false or short answer, and how many questions you want.
Review and export
Check each question and explanation, edit anything off, then export the set.
Review each question before it reaches students. Check that the correct answer is accurate, that wrong options are plausible, and that each item tests one idea. A few minutes of editing keeps the set tied to what you actually taught.

Frequently asked questions
Can DeckOwl copy existing quiz questions out of my Canvas course?
No. DeckOwl creates new questions from files you upload, such as PDFs, slides, DOCX, PPTX, notes or photos of pages, rather than copying questions already in a course.
How many quiz questions should one lecture quiz have?
There is no fixed rule, but 10 to 15 questions is a common length for covering one lecture. You can trim the generated set before you publish it.
Which question type is better for checking understanding?
Multiple-choice questions with plausible wrong options test understanding well, while short answer questions require recall. Mixing both gives a fuller check.
Is QTI export included on the free plan?
No. QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are on the Pro plan at $14.99/month, and the free plan has no exports.
