Practice questions from your own course material

If you need a canvas quiz app that writes practice questions from your readings and lecture slides, start with the material you already have. Upload it, and the generator builds multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with an explanation for each answer, so you can check your understanding before a quiz is posted.

  • Generate questions from PDFs, slides, notes and page photos
  • Read an explanation with every answer, right or wrong
  • Choose multiple choice, true/false or open questions for each set
  • Export to QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML on Pro when you need to move questions into a course
Example Canvas LMS quiz settings to know
In Canvas LMS, which question type lets a student select more than one correct option?Multiple Answers. The student must select every correct option to earn full credit.
Which Canvas quiz setting controls how many times a student can submit the quiz?Allowed Attempts. It can be set to a specific number or left unlimited.
What does Shuffle Answers do in a Canvas quiz?It randomizes answer order for each student, so the same correct option does not always appear in the same position.
Which Canvas setting controls when students can see their scores and correct answers? The results visibility options. They let the instructor show results after a set date so students cannot share answers while others are still testing.
What is an item bank in Canvas LMS?A store of reusable questions that an instructor can pull into several quizzes, which makes it easier to reuse and update questions.

Three question types

Multiple choice, true/false and open questions, each with an explanation of why the answer is correct.

Works with your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages, and questions are written from your content.

Exports for your course

On Pro, export to QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML. Check that your school's Canvas accepts QTI 2.1 imports before you upload.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a lecture slide deck, a PDF reading or your typed notes. Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition.

Choose a question type

Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions, then generate a set based on the material you uploaded.

Review and study

Read each explanation, edit anything that does not match your course, then practice in the browser or export.

Because the questions come from your own files, they follow your instructor's terminology and examples. Review each one before you rely on it, and remove any question that does not match what your course covers.

Exports to QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML are part of the Pro plan. Free accounts get three generations a month and can study in the browser.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a Canvas quiz have for a one-hour exam?

There is no fixed rule, but many instructors match the number of questions to the time allowed and leave a few minutes for review. Multiple-choice items usually take less time than open questions, so mix the types to fit the exam length.

What makes a good distractor in a multiple-choice question?

A good distractor is plausible to someone who has partly learned the topic, such as a common misconception or a near-miss term from the reading. Avoid options that are obviously wrong or that give away the answer through length or wording.

Can I export my questions to Canvas with DeckOwl?

Export to QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML is a Pro feature. Before you import the file, confirm that your school's Canvas setup accepts QTI 2.1 uploads.

Is DeckOwl free to try?

Yes. The Free plan includes three generations per month and studying in the browser, and you do not need a credit card to start. Exports require a paid plan.
