When a Canvas quiz disappears, find it or rebuild it from notes
Most missing Canvas quizzes are unpublished, hidden by a date or moved out of view. Check those first, then generate a replacement from your own material.
Why a Canvas quiz disappears and how to get it back
The moment a canvas quiz disappeared from your course list, most people assume the work is lost. In practice it is usually still there, just unpublished, outside its availability window, or removed from a module view.
- Unpublished quizzes are hidden from students until you publish them.
- Available from or Until dates can hide a quiz outside its window.
- Modules and course navigation can hide a quiz link without deleting the quiz.
- Student View shows the course as students see it, so you can check visibility without switching accounts.
Find the hidden quiz
Canvas quizzes can be unpublished, dated out of view or pulled from a module view. In each case the quiz itself is usually intact, so nothing needs rebuilding yet.
Rebuild from your notes
Upload the PDF, slides or notes you studied from and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations.
Export when you are ready
Plus exports PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV files, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for importing into other learning systems.
How it works
Check the quiz status
Open Quizzes in the course and confirm the quiz is published, since unpublished quizzes stay hidden from students.
Check dates and modules
Look at the Available from and Until dates, then the module and course navigation settings that may hide the quiz link.
Rebuild if it is gone
Upload your source notes, generate questions with explanations, and review each one before you publish it to students.
Start with publishing status, then availability dates, then course navigation. If the quiz was created as a New Quiz, check the Assignments page too, because it may be listed there instead of under Quizzes.
If the quiz really is gone, generating a new one from your original material is faster than rewriting it from scratch, and you can review every question before students see it.

Frequently asked questions
Why did my Canvas quiz disappear from the student view?
The most common reason is that the quiz is unpublished, because students cannot see unpublished quizzes. Check the publish status first, then the availability dates.
How many questions should I write for a single chapter quiz?
Ten to fifteen questions usually cover the main ideas of one chapter well, especially if they mix recall with application. Check that each question has only one correct answer before you publish it.
Can I export a rebuilt quiz for another learning system?
Pro includes QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export for importing into other learning systems, and Plus includes PDF and DOCX export. Exports are paid features, so the free plan is limited to studying in the browser.
Is the free plan enough to rebuild one quiz?
The free plan includes 3 generations per month with studying in the browser and no exports. Plus removes the generation limit, and students get 40% off with a school email.
