Checking why a Canvas quiz score is missing

When Canvas quiz grades not showing in the gradebook is the problem, start with the instructor-side settings. Manual posting hides scores until they are posted, the quiz may still be unpublished, and the student's attempt may not have been submitted yet. Gradebook filters for grading periods or assignment groups can also hide a column you expect to see.

  • Check whether the instructor has manual posting turned on for the course.
  • Confirm the quiz is published and the student's attempt was submitted.
  • Clear gradebook filters for grading period, assignment group or modules.
  • Look at the quiz's assignment settings to see whether it is tied to a gradebook column.
Common Canvas quiz gradebook checks
A Canvas quiz is published but its score is missing from the gradebook. Which posting setting most often hides it?Manual posting hides grades until the instructor posts them, so check the Post Policies setting.
Why might a student's quiz attempt not appear in the gradebook even though they started it?An attempt that is still in progress or was never submitted has no final score to post.
Which gradebook view setting can make an expected column disappear?A grading period, assignment group or modules filter, because it limits which columns are shown.
What happens to quiz scores if the quiz is still unpublished?Students cannot take it, so no scores are recorded until the instructor publishes it.
What should you check if a quiz has no gradebook column at all?Whether the quiz is tied to an assignment, since a quiz without one has no column to hold its score.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Canvas quiz grades not appear in the gradebook right away?

Often the instructor has manual posting turned on, so scores stay hidden until they are posted. An attempt that was started but never submitted also has no score to show.

What should I check if a published quiz has no gradebook column?

Confirm the quiz is tied to an assignment and that the gradebook view is not filtered by grading period or assignment group. Clearing those filters usually brings the column back.

Does DeckOwl connect to Canvas and post grades for me?

No. DeckOwl creates quizzes from your own material and does not connect to Canvas or change gradebook scores. Exports to QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML are part of the Pro plan.

Can I make practice quizzes from my notes to study for a Canvas course exam?

Yes. Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text notes or a photo of a page to get multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions with explanations. The free plan includes 3 generations per month.
