What a muted Canvas quiz means for studying

When a canvas quiz has been muted, the quiz is still part of your course, but scores or feedback may be hidden until your instructor releases them. Waiting for the release is a poor use of study time, so it helps to practice from the same material the quiz is likely to cover.

  • Check the syllabus and module pages for the topics the muted quiz covers.
  • Upload those readings or slides and generate a practice quiz from them.
  • Answer without looking at the notes, then read each explanation for the answers you missed.
  • Repeat weak topics with flashcards the next day so the material sticks.
Example general biology practice questions
What organelle is the main site of ATP production in eukaryotic cells? The mitochondrion, because cellular respiration there produces most of the cell's ATP.
True or false: DNA replication is semiconservative.True. Each new double helix contains one original strand and one newly synthesized strand.
What is the role of osmosis in a plant cell placed in pure water?Water moves into the cell by osmosis, pressing the cell membrane against the wall and making the cell turgid.
Which phase of mitosis do chromosomes line up along the cell's equator?Metaphase, because spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes and align them at the middle of the cell.
Why do enzymes have an optimal temperature?Heat speeds reactions up to a point, then denatures the enzyme's shape so its active site no longer fits the substrate.

Quizzes from your files

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or photos of pages and get multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with an explanation so you learn why an answer is right, not just which letter to pick.

Flashcards and mind maps too

Switch to spaced repetition flashcards or a mind map of the same material when a quiz format isn't the right fit.

How it works

Upload your course material

Add the lecture slides, readings or notes that the muted quiz covers.

Generate a practice quiz

Choose question types and get a set of questions with explanations in a minute or so.

Study until the quiz is posted

Work through the questions in the browser, then check your gaps against what your instructor posts.

DeckOwl is not connected to Canvas and cannot change muting settings. What it can do is turn your own lecture slides, readings or notes into multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions with explanations, so you can test yourself before the quiz is visible or graded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I study for a quiz I can't see yet?

Start with the topics in your syllabus and class slides, then practice recalling them without notes. Once the quiz is posted, compare your gaps with the questions your instructor used.

How many practice questions should I answer before a test?

Aim for enough questions to cover every topic at least twice, and focus extra time on the ones you get wrong. Repeating missed questions over several days works better than one long session.

Can I export my practice quiz to Canvas?

QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are included in the Pro plan, and many learning platforms can import QTI files. Ask your instructor whether importing a practice quiz is allowed in your course.

Is DeckOwl free to start?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to begin.
