What a muted Canvas quiz means for studying

When a Canvas quiz is muted, your instructor has hidden the scores and comments from students, usually until grades are posted. The quiz itself still happened, and the material it covered is still what you need to know.

  • Muting hides grades from students; it does not delete them.
  • Ask your instructor when grades will be posted if the deadline has passed.
  • Rebuild the quiz topics from your own slides or notes to check what you missed.
  • Use the explanations to see why each wrong answer was wrong.
Example Canvas grading questions to practice
If an instructor mutes a Canvas quiz, can students still see their score? No. Muting hides the score and comments from students until the grades are unmuted or posted.
Do muted grades count toward a student's total in Canvas?Yes. Muting only hides the grade from students, so it still counts toward the course total.
What usually makes a Canvas quiz show as muted? The instructor muted the assignment, which keeps scores and comments hidden from students until it is unmuted.
Who controls whether a muted Canvas quiz grade is shown to students? The instructor does, by unmuting or posting the grades, because students cannot change that setting.
Can a student unmute a Canvas quiz by retaking it?No. Only the instructor can unmute grades, and retaking the quiz does not change that setting.

How it works

Upload your course material

Add the lecture slides, readings or notes that the muted quiz covered.

Generate a practice quiz

DeckOwl writes questions with answers and explanations from your files.

Study until the scores are posted

Work through the quiz, check the explanations and review the gaps before your instructor unmutes the grades.

You cannot unmute the quiz from the student side, so waiting is the only way to see your score. Practicing with questions built from the same slides or notes keeps your recall sharp in the meantime.

DeckOwl creates a new quiz from your own files, with explanations for every answer. It does not connect to Canvas or change your grades.

Frequently asked questions

Do muted grades still count toward my Canvas course grade?

Usually yes. Muting hides the score from students, so the grade still counts toward the course total once it is posted.

What should I study while a Canvas quiz is muted?

Review the lecture slides, readings and notes that the quiz covered, and focus on the topics you were least sure about. Practice questions with explanations help you test recall without waiting for the grade.

Does DeckOwl connect to Canvas or unmute my quiz?

No. DeckOwl does not connect to Canvas and cannot change grade settings. You upload your own files and get a practice quiz from them.

Can I export my practice quiz?

Exports are available on paid plans: PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV on Plus, plus QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML on Pro. The free plan includes three generations per month and studying in the browser.
