Reading Canvas item analysis without guessing

Canvas quiz item analysis shows how each question performed after students answer it. The difficulty index is the share of students who got the item right, and the discrimination index compares how high scorers and low scorers answered. A question nearly everyone misses, or one that strong and weak students answer the same way, is worth a second look before you reuse it.

  • Difficulty index: the percentage of students who answered the item correctly.
  • Discrimination index: how much better top scorers did than bottom scorers on that item.
  • Distractor analysis: which wrong options students chose, and whether any option drew almost no responses.
  • Revision loop: rewrite flagged items, then retest the same concept on the next quiz.
Example Canvas item analysis questions and answers
What does a difficulty index of 0.85 mean for a quiz item?About 85 percent of students answered it correctly. That makes it an easy item, so check whether it still tests something useful.
What is a discrimination index? It compares how students in the top-scoring and bottom-scoring groups answered an item. Values near zero or below zero suggest the item does not separate strong and weak students.
What range of difficulty index do many instructors aim for?Roughly 0.3 to 0.7 is a common guideline. Items in that range usually give useful information without being trivially easy or nearly impossible.
Why review distractor analysis in item analysis? It shows which wrong options students chose. A distractor that almost no one selects is not plausible and should be rewritten.
True or false: a negative discrimination index means weak students outperformed strong students on that item.True. A negative value often signals a miskeyed or confusing item, so verify the correct answer before keeping it.

Questions from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX files, slides, plain notes or photos of pages. DeckOwl drafts questions that match what you actually taught.

Explanations for every answer

Each multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer question includes an explanation, so you can check the key before students see it.

Edit before you publish

Treat each generated question as a draft. Tighten wording, replace weak distractors and keep only the items that test the concept you care about.

How it works

Upload your source

Add a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a page. Text recognition reads images as well as typed files.

Generate and review the draft

Choose question types and check each item for a single clear answer and plausible wrong options.

Run item analysis in Canvas

After students finish, review difficulty and discrimination in the Canvas report and revise any item that does not separate strong and weak students.

Good data starts with well-written items. Questions with one clearly correct answer and plausible distractors tend to produce cleaner results than questions with two defensible options or obvious giveaways. DeckOwl can draft multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions with explanations from your PDFs, slides or notes, so you start with a draft to edit rather than a blank page. Free accounts get 3 generations per month and browser study, and exports are available on paid plans.

After students take the quiz, open the item analysis report in Canvas and flag any question with a near-zero or negative discrimination value. Negative values often mean the keyed answer is wrong or the wording is confusing, so check the key first. Rewrite the item, then reteach the concept if many students missed it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good difficulty index for a Canvas quiz question?

Many instructors aim for roughly 0.3 to 0.7, meaning 30 to 70 percent of students answered correctly. Items outside that range are not always bad, but they deserve a closer look.

How should I use discrimination index results?

Keep items with positive discrimination, where stronger students tend to answer correctly more often than weaker ones. Rewrite items with near-zero or negative values before you reuse them.

Can DeckOwl export questions for Canvas?

Exports are paid features. Plus includes PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export, so confirm the import format your course platform accepts before relying on it.

Does DeckOwl have a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Exports require a paid plan.
