How to lay out a quiz that reads clearly

A good canvas quiz layout keeps questions short, numbered and grouped by topic, so students spend their time on the content rather than hunting for the next item.

  • Group questions by unit or lecture heading
  • Keep answer options similar in length to avoid giveaways
  • Place figures directly above the items that refer to them
  • Put explanations on the review screen, not in the question stem
Example Canvas quiz layout questions
Why should each quiz question test one concept?A single concept per item shows exactly which idea a student misunderstood, which makes feedback and grading clearer.
Where should an image go relative to its question?Directly above the question or answer it supports, so students do not have to scroll or flip pages to connect them.
Why keep answer choices similar in length?Noticeably longer correct answers give test-wise students a cue, which hides what the item actually measures.
How should multi-part questions be placed on a quiz?Keep all parts on the same page so students can read the full prompt and answer without losing context.
What belongs in a quiz explanation versus the question stem? The stem states the task, while the explanation, shown after submission, says why the correct answer is right.

One idea per question

Each item tests a single fact or concept, so students and graders can see exactly what was missed.

Explanations on every item

Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions come with explanations you can show after submission.

Export when you need it

Download PDF or DOCX on Plus, and QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML on Pro, to bring questions into your learning system.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions, then generate.

Review and arrange

Check each question and order them in your quiz layout before you export or publish.

Consistent spacing matters too. Put answer choices in the same order on every item, keep images close to the question they support, and avoid splitting a multi-part question across pages.

DeckOwl drafts the questions from your own material, and you edit the order and wording before exporting.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a Canvas quiz have?

There is no fixed rule, so match the count to your learning objectives and give each one at least one question.

What makes a good true or false question layout?

Write one claim per statement and avoid words like always or never unless they are accurate. Keep statements similar in length so the answer is not obvious from their form.

Can I export generated quizzes for my learning management system?

QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are included on the Pro plan at $14.99/month. Check your institution's import steps, since they vary by setup.

Is DeckOwl free to try?

Yes, the Free plan gives 3 generations per month and needs no credit card to start. Exports are paid features, so PDF and DOCX require Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month.
