Why build a quiz from the article itself

A Canvas quiz built from a specific news story tests whether students can find the key facts, spot the source of a claim and tell reporting apart from opinion. DeckOwl reads the article you give it and writes questions about that text, so the quiz matches what you actually assigned.

  • Multiple-choice, true/false and open questions with explanations
  • Works from pasted text, PDFs, DOCX, slides and photos of pages
  • Free plan: 3 generations per month, study in the browser
  • Pro: QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export for learning management systems
Example news literacy questions for a Canvas quiz
True or false: an opinion column should be read the same way as a news report.False. A news report aims to present verified facts, while an opinion column presents the writer's view and should be checked against reporting.
Which part of a news article usually answers who, what, when, where and why?The lead, the opening paragraph. It summarises the key facts first so readers get the main points quickly.
What does attribution mean in a news story?Naming the source of a claim, such as an official or a document, so readers can judge how reliable it is.
Why do many news stories put the most important facts first? This inverted pyramid structure lets readers get the key points quickly and lets editors cut from the bottom without losing essentials.
What is a primary source in news research? An original record or firsthand account, such as a court document, official statement or interview, rather than someone else's description of it.

Questions with explanations

Each multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer question comes with a short explanation of why the answer is correct.

Built from your own text

Upload a PDF, DOCX, plain text or a photo of a printed article. Questions are based only on the material you provide.

Canvas-ready export

On Pro, export QTI 2.1 files that can be imported into an LMS that accepts that format, along with Moodle XML.

How it works

Add the article

Paste the article text, upload a PDF or DOCX, or photograph a printed copy. Use material you have the right to use.

Choose the question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions and how many you want. Review the draft before you publish it.

Study or export

Practise in the browser on the free plan, or export the quiz as QTI 2.1 with a Plus or Pro subscription.

Because the questions come from your material, you can adjust them before anything reaches students. Remove weak items, reword stems, and keep the explanations that show why each answer is right. Each quiz reflects the article you chose, not a general news summary.

The NZ Herald does not provide ready-made quizzes here, and DeckOwl does not pull stories from the newspaper. You bring the text, and the tool turns it into a quiz you can edit and export.

Frequently asked questions

What should a quiz on a news article test?

Focus on the main facts, who said what and where the claim came from, and whether a statement is reporting or opinion. Those skills carry across any news source. A few questions on the article's structure help students see how the story is organised.

How many questions should a news quiz have?

Eight to twelve questions usually cover one article without making the quiz tiring. Mix question types so students have to read carefully and not just recognise a phrase. Adjust the count to fit your class time.

Can I import the quiz into Canvas?

Pro includes QTI 2.1 export, which you can import into an LMS that accepts that format. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports. Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export with unlimited generations.

Do students get a discount?

Students get 40% off with a school email. No credit card is needed to start on the free plan.
