Prepare for Canvas quiz proctoring with practice from your own notes
Upload your PDFs, slides or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations to practice before a proctored Canvas quiz.
What Canvas proctoring settings control
Most instructors reviewing canvas quiz proctoring options want to know what Canvas enforces by itself and what needs a third-party tool. Canvas can require an access code, restrict a quiz to certain IP addresses, limit the time allowed, show one question at a time and shuffle answer order. These settings control who can start a quiz and how questions are presented, but they do not watch what a student does during the attempt.
- Access codes control who can start a quiz but do not monitor behavior during it.
- IP address restrictions limit access to specific networks, such as a campus network.
- One-question-at-a-time display and time limits reduce how much of the quiz a student can see at once.
- Lockdown tools are separate products, so confirm with your instructor whether they are required.
Questions from your material
Upload PDFs, DOCX files, PPTX slides, plain-text notes or photos of pages and get quiz questions drawn from that content.
Explanations for every answer
Each multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer question comes with an explanation so you learn why an answer is right.
Export for your course
Export to PDF or DOCX to study offline. On Pro, export QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML files for platforms that accept them.
How it works
Upload your course files
Add the readings, lecture slides or notes your Canvas quiz will cover.
Choose question types
Pick multiple-choice, true/false or open questions and how many you want to practice.
Practice and review
Work through the questions, read the explanations and revisit weak spots with spaced repetition.
Tools such as Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are separate products that can be connected to Canvas quizzes. Your institution decides whether they are required, so check your course settings and syllabus before an exam. Knowing which settings apply to a given quiz makes it easier to prepare students for what they will see on test day.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an access code and a lockdown browser on a Canvas quiz?
An access code is a password that lets students start the quiz, while a lockdown browser is separate software that restricts what the computer can do during the attempt. Access codes do not monitor activity once the quiz has started.
How should I study for a timed, proctored quiz?
Practice with questions written from the same readings and slides, and time yourself so the pace feels familiar. Review explanations for every wrong answer and revisit those topics with spaced repetition.
Can I export practice questions to use in Canvas?
Yes, QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are available on the Pro plan. Check with your instructor before importing any practice material into a graded course.
Is DeckOwl a proctoring tool?
No, DeckOwl does not monitor students during a quiz. It generates practice quizzes and flashcards from your own study material so you can prepare.
