Check your Canvas quiz in teacher view before students see it
Upload lecture slides, PDFs or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations. QTI 2.1 export on Pro helps you bring them into your learning management system.
Using teacher view to check a quiz before it goes live
Teachers often open the Canvas quiz teacher view to see what students will see, check question wording and confirm settings before a quiz goes live. Writing those questions from scratch takes time, especially when each one needs a clear correct answer and a short explanation.
- Generate questions from your own slides, notes or PDFs instead of writing each item by hand.
- Include explanations so students learn from wrong answers during review.
- Preview every quiz as a student would before publishing it to your course.
- Export QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML on Pro, or PDF and DOCX on Plus.
Questions from your own material
Upload PDFs, DOCX files, slides, plain notes or photos of pages and get quiz questions based on what you actually taught.
Explanations for every answer
Each multiple-choice, true/false or short answer question includes an explanation you can review before publishing.
Export for your LMS
Pro includes QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export, and Plus includes PDF and DOCX export for handouts and review.
How it works
Upload your course material
Add a lecture deck, chapter PDF or set of notes for the unit you are assessing.
Choose question types
Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions and review the generated set.
Check it in teacher view first
Preview the quiz as a student would, then export or copy the questions into your course.
DeckOwl starts from your own material, so the questions match the chapter or lecture you taught. You can review each item, edit the wording and then preview the quiz in your course to confirm it reads well for students.
Once the set looks right, Pro users can export QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML files. Check that your learning management system accepts the format before importing, and keep the original notes so you can regenerate questions later.

Frequently asked questions
What does the preview option show in a Canvas quiz?
Preview lets you take the quiz the way a student would, so you can test question wording, order and settings. Preview attempts are for checking the quiz and do not replace a real student submission.
How many questions should a short quiz include?
A common approach is about one question per minute for recall items, so a 15-minute quiz might have 12 to 15 multiple-choice or true/false questions. Open questions take longer and should be fewer.
Which DeckOwl plan lets me export QTI for my LMS?
QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are included in the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The Plus plan at $39 per year or $7.99 per month includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.
Can I try DeckOwl before paying?
Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, but it does not include exports. No credit card is needed to start.
