What a URL code is and how to build your own quiz

Students who type a gimkit url code into a browser are usually trying to join a live game session. That code is set by the game platform, so it only works inside that platform.

  • Upload notes, slides or a PDF from your course and get questions drawn only from that content.
  • Choose multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, each with an explanation.
  • Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to PDF or DOCX on Plus.
  • Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export for teachers who use those systems.
Example URL structure practice questions
What does the https:// part of a URL indicate? It is the protocol, which tells the browser how to connect to the server. The s means the connection is encrypted with TLS.
In https://example.com/quiz?id=42, what is the query string??id=42. It follows the question mark and passes parameters to the server, here id with the value 42.
What character marks the start of the path after the domain? The forward slash (/). It begins the path that points to a specific resource on that server.
What part of a URL comes after the # symbol? The fragment. It tells the browser which section of a page to show, and it is not sent to the server.
In play.example.com, what is the label play?A subdomain. It is placed before the main domain and often points to a separate section of the same site.

Frequently asked questions

What parts make up a URL?

A typical URL has a protocol such as https, a domain, an optional path, an optional query string after a question mark, and an optional fragment after a hash. Quizzing yourself on each part helps you read links more quickly.

How should I study URL structure before a quiz?

Write out one example URL and label each part, then cover the labels and try again. Repeat with a few different links so the pattern sticks.

Can DeckOwl create a Gimkit join code for my class?

No. DeckOwl does not host live games or create join codes. It generates quizzes from your own study material.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but exports are not included. Plus and Pro unlock exports, and students get 40% off with a school email.
