Why shuffling answers helps and how to set it up

Students who always see the correct answer in the same letter position often remember the position instead of the idea. When you shuffle answers in Google Forms quizzes, each respondent sees the choices in a different order, so the content has to do the work.

  • Turn on Shuffle option order for each multiple-choice, checkbox or dropdown question you want randomized.
  • Avoid All of the above or None of the above choices, since shuffling can move them away from the options they refer to.
  • Grading follows the answer key, so the correct choice still scores correctly after the order changes.
  • After each quiz, read the explanations to see why the right answer is correct and why the other choices are wrong.
Example Google Forms quiz questions with shuffled answers
In Google Forms, which setting randomizes the choice order for a multiple-choice question?Shuffle option order, checked below the question's choices. It changes only the display order for each respondent.
Does turning on shuffle option order change which answer is marked correct in a quiz? No. The answer key stays linked to the correct choice, so grading is the same after the options move.
Why do quiz writers shuffle answer choices when students retake a quiz?Fixed positions let students memorize that the answer is always C. Shuffling forces them to recall the content.
Should an option reading All of the above stay last when answers are shuffled? It cannot be relied on to stay last, since shuffling can move it above the choices it refers to. Avoid it or write the options explicitly.
What makes a wrong answer choice useful in a practice quiz?A plausible distractor that matches a common misconception, because choosing it reveals what the student still needs to review.
