Why build your own ESL grammar quiz

Most ready-made quizzes cover the same tenses in the same order, which rarely matches the week's lesson. If you were hoping for a printable worksheet, you can still get one, but the stronger option is an ESL grammar quiz built from the exact material your learners are studying.

  • Questions match the grammar points in your own lesson material
  • Every multiple-choice, true/false and open question includes an explanation
  • Works with PDFs, slides, notes and photos of printed pages
  • Start free with no credit card, and students get 40% off Plus with a school email
Example ESL grammar quiz questions on tenses and articles
Choose the correct form: "She ___ in London since 2019." (a) lives (b) has lived (c) lived(b) has lived. Present perfect links a past starting point to the present, and "since 2019" marks that starting point.
Fill in the article: "Can you pass me ___ salt?" (a) a (b) the (c) anthe. Both speakers can see or know which salt is meant, so the noun is specific and takes "the".
True or false: "Each of the students have finished the test."False. "Each" takes a singular verb, so the sentence should read "Each of the students has finished the test."
Rewrite as a question: "They have been waiting since noon."How long have they been waiting? Present perfect continuous questions put "have" before the subject and use "how long" to ask about duration.
Choose the correct form: "If I ___ more time, I would travel." (a) have (b) had (c) having(b) had. The second conditional uses past simple in the if-clause for unreal or unlikely situations, with "would" in the result clause.

Questions from your lesson

Quiz items come from the tenses, articles and structures in your own material, so the quiz matches what you actually covered this week.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes a short reason for the correct answer, which helps learners see why a form is right instead of guessing again.

Three question formats

Mix multiple-choice, true/false and short open questions in one quiz to test recognition and production.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page. Photos are read with text recognition.

Choose the question types

Pick multiple-choice, true/false, open questions or a mix, then generate the quiz in one pass.

Review and export

Check the questions and explanations, then study in the browser. Plus users can export to PDF or DOCX.

Upload your slides or notes and DeckOwl writes questions that target the structures you taught, such as present perfect versus past simple or the article rules you covered. Each answer comes with a short explanation, so learners can check their reasoning, and tutors can reuse the quiz for review.

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study. Plus adds unlimited generations and PDF or DOCX export for printing or sharing.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should an ESL grammar quiz have?

Ten to fifteen questions is a practical length for a single session, which leaves time for explanations. Shorter quizzes work well for one grammar point, while mixed reviews benefit from more items.

Which grammar points work best in a quiz for ESL learners?

Quizzes tend to work best on one contrast at a time, such as present perfect versus past simple, articles with specific and general nouns, or first and second conditionals. Narrow topics make the explanations easier for learners to follow.

Can I export the quiz to share with my class?

PDF and DOCX export are included in Plus, which is $99.90/year or $9.99/month. QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are available on Pro at $14.99/month.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. The free plan gives 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser without a card.
