Making a quiz on Google Forms, step by step

Building a quiz in Google Forms takes only a few clicks once the questions exist, and the slow part is writing them. If you want to make a quiz on Google Forms from lecture slides or a textbook chapter, start with the questions, not the form.

  • Add a new question with the plus icon in the right-hand toolbar.
  • Turn on Make this a quiz under Settings before you set any answers.
  • Set one correct answer and a point value for each question in the Answer key.
  • Mark questions as Required if students must answer them before submitting.

Which setting turns a regular form into a graded quiz in Google Forms?Make this a quiz, found under Settings. Turning it on adds the Answer key and point values to each question.
Where do you set the correct answer for a multiple-choice question? The Answer key on that question. It lets you pick the correct option and assign its points.
When can students see their grade in a Google Forms quiz? That depends on the release setting under Quizzes in Settings. You can release it right after submission or after you review responses.

Explanations included

Every question comes with a short explanation, so you can check the answer before you copy anything into a form.

Export on paid plans

Plus exports to PDF and DOCX, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML. The free plan studies in the browser.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slides, a Word file or photos of pages. Text is read from images too.

Review the questions

Check each question and its explanation, and edit anything that does not match your course.

Copy or export

Paste the questions into Google Forms, or export a file on Plus or Pro.

In Google Forms, open a blank form, switch on Make this a quiz under Settings, then add each question. For each one, open the Answer key, pick the correct option and set the points. Under the feedback options you can add a note for right and wrong answers, and in the quiz settings you choose when students see their grade.

DeckOwl handles the writing part. Upload your material, review the drafted questions and their explanations, then copy the ones you want into the form. Free accounts get 3 generations a month, and no credit card is needed to start.
