Use Google Forms for quizzes, with answer keys and points
Google Forms quiz mode grades what you write, but drafting every question by hand takes time. DeckOwl generates multiple-choice, true/false and open questions with explanations from your own notes, slides or PDFs.
Building a Google Forms quiz from your own study material
Knowing how to use Google Forms for quizzes helps once you have questions, but the slow part is usually writing them. Lecture slides, textbook chapters and handwritten notes hold the material; the form only grades what you type into it. Start by choosing the question types you want, then check that each one has one clearly correct answer.
- Multiple-choice and true/false questions grade automatically in Forms once an answer key is set.
- Short answer questions need exact accepted answers or manual grading.
- Write one correct answer per question so grades stay clear and fair.
- Review generated questions against your source before sharing a quiz with students.
Questions from your material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or a photo of a page and get questions drawn from that content.
Explanations for every answer
Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions include an explanation so you know why an answer is right.
Export when you need it
PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export are on Plus. QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are on Pro.
How it works
Turn on quiz mode
Open Settings in your form and switch on Make this a quiz.
Add answers and points
Mark the correct answer in each question's answer key and set its point value.
Choose when to release grades
Pick whether respondents see their scores right away or after you review the responses.
In Forms, quiz mode lives under Settings. Multiple choice, checkboxes and dropdowns grade automatically once you set the answer key, while short answer responses need exact accepted answers or manual grading. Feedback fields let you explain why an answer is right, which turns a quiz into a study tool.
If you would rather start from your own material, DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, notes and photos of pages, then drafts multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations. Check every question against your source before you share it, and note that PDF and DOCX export are on the Plus plan.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions should a Google Forms quiz have for a practice check?
Five to ten focused questions is a common range for a short check that fits in one sitting. A shorter quiz also makes the feedback easier to act on.
What makes a quiz question test understanding rather than memory?
Ask why or how something works, not only what a term is called. Wrong options that reflect common mistakes show whether a correct answer reflects real understanding.
Can I start using DeckOwl without paying?
