Why custom lens questions beat generic sets

Ready-made collections of MCAT lens practice questions are easy to find, but they rarely follow the sign conventions and examples your own course used. Generating questions from your own notes keeps your practice aligned with what you are actually learning.

  • Thin lens equation problems with varied numbers
  • Magnification and image orientation questions
  • Real versus virtual images for converging and diverging lenses
  • Short-answer prompts that require you to explain the reasoning
Example MCAT lens practice questions
A converging lens has a focal length of 10 cm and an object sits 30 cm away. Where does the image form?At 15 cm on the far side of the lens, so the image is real. The thin lens equation gives 1/di = 1/10 - 1/30, so di = 15 cm.
Where does the image form for an object 5 cm from a 10 cm converging lens?On the same side as the object, at 10 cm, so the image is virtual and upright. The object is inside the focal length, so the rays diverge and the image is virtual.
What is the magnification for a 10 cm object placed 30 cm from a converging lens with f = 10 cm?The magnification is -0.5, so the image is inverted and half the object's height. Using m = -di/do with di = 15 cm and do = 30 cm gives this result.
Is the image formed by a diverging lens real or virtual?Virtual, upright and reduced in every case. A diverging lens spreads light rays apart, so they never actually converge to form a real image.
Which type of lens corrects farsightedness (hyperopia)?A converging lens. It adds focusing power so light from nearby objects converges on the retina.

Multiple question types

Get multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions that test the thin lens equation, magnification and ray diagrams.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with an explanation so you can see why the right answer works, not just which letter to pick.

Built from your material

Questions come from your own slides or notes, so they match the optics your course actually covered.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page.

Pick a question type

Choose multiple-choice, true/false or short answer for your lens questions.

Practice and export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to PDF, DOCX or Anki on Plus.

Lens problems on the MCAT usually come down to a few repeatable skills: solving the thin lens equation, choosing the right sign for object and image distances, and deciding whether an image is real or virtual. Practicing these with varied wording helps you recognize them on test day.

Paste in a chapter, upload slides, or photograph a worked example, then review the explanations after each attempt. Missed questions show you which idea to revisit before you move on.

Frequently asked questions

How do I approach thin lens equation questions on the MCAT?

Identify the focal length and object distance, then solve 1/f = 1/do + 1/di for the image distance. Check your sign convention before you calculate magnification.

Which optics topics should I drill most before test day?

Focus on the thin lens equation, magnification, and the difference between real and virtual images for converging and diverging lenses. Practice sign conventions until they feel automatic.

Can I export these lens questions to Word or PDF?

Yes, on the Plus plan, which includes PDF and DOCX export. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Is there a free plan to start?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students get 40% off with a school email.
