Reuse a Moodle quiz from another course or build a new one
Copying a quiz between Moodle courses depends on permissions and where the questions live. If you need a fresh quiz, DeckOwl turns your own PDFs, slides or notes into questions you can export as Moodle XML.
When to import a quiz and when to generate one
Teachers often need to reuse a quiz from last term, and a Moodle import quiz from another course is the direct route when both courses sit on the same site. In most Moodle versions you open Course administration, choose Course reuse, then Import, select the source course, and tick the quiz. You need the right capability in both courses, so ask an administrator if the option is missing.
- Check that you have import permission in both the source and destination courses.
- Confirm the quiz questions were included in the import by opening the quiz Questions page.
- Use Moodle XML export to move questions between question banks when there is no existing quiz to copy.
- Review every generated question for accuracy before it reaches students.
Multiple-choice, true/false and open questions
Each question comes with an explanation so students see why the right answer is right.
Built from your own material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page and get questions based on that content.
Moodle XML export
The Pro plan exports questions as Moodle XML, ready to import into a Moodle question bank.
How it works
Upload your source
Add the lecture slides, reading or notes the quiz should cover.
Pick question types and review
Choose multiple choice, true/false or open questions, then check each item and its explanation.
Export or study
Export to Moodle XML on Pro, or study the quiz in the browser on the free plan.
Importing only works when the old quiz already exists in Moodle. If you only have notes, slides or a textbook chapter, it is faster to generate new questions than to rebuild them by hand. DeckOwl creates multiple-choice, true/false and open questions from that material, each with an explanation, and the Pro plan exports them as Moodle XML for your own question bank.

Frequently asked questions
How do I import a quiz from another Moodle course?
Use Course administration, then Course reuse and Import, and select the source course and the quiz. Your Moodle role must allow importing in both courses. Your site may have changed these menu names, so check with your administrator if you cannot find them.
What format is best for moving questions between Moodle courses?
Moodle XML is the native format for importing and exporting questions between question banks. It keeps question types, answers and feedback in a form Moodle reads directly.
Can I export DeckOwl quizzes to Moodle XML for free?
No. Moodle XML export is part of the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The free plan allows three generations per month and studying in the browser without exports.
How many questions should a quiz have for one lecture?
Most one-lecture quizzes work well with 8 to 12 questions covering the main terms and concepts. Write a mix of recall and application items so students cannot pass by memorizing only definitions.
