Fix Moodle quiz access issues on your web server
Find the server and quiz settings that lock students out, then build practice questions from your own course material.
How to troubleshoot Moodle quiz access on a web server
When students get locked out or see errors, the cause is usually one of a few settings. Moodle quiz access problems often come from the site address in wwwroot, HTTPS redirects, or the quiz's own password and IP restrictions. Checking these in order is faster than guessing.
- Confirm that $CFG->wwwroot matches the public URL, including https.
- Open Extra restrictions on attempts and check the password and IP fields.
- Test with a student account in a private browser window before the quiz opens.
- Read the web server error log for 403 or 500 responses when a page fails to load.
Check the server address
Confirm that the wwwroot value in config.php matches the public URL students use, including https.
Review quiz restrictions
Look at password, IP address, and time window fields under Extra restrictions on attempts to find what is blocking access.
Turn notes into practice
Upload slides, PDFs, or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false, or open questions with explanations before the quiz.
How it works
Upload your material
Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file, or photo of a page covering the topics your quiz will test.
Generate the questions
Choose multiple-choice, true/false, or short answer and review each question and its explanation.
Study or export
Practice in the browser on the Free plan, or export to Moodle XML on the Pro plan.
On the server side, Moodle needs a working web server such as Apache or Nginx with PHP, and config.php must point $CFG->wwwroot at the exact public URL. A mismatch can break quiz links or send students into a login loop. When a page returns a 403 or 500 error, the web server error log usually names the file or rule involved.
On the quiz side, open the settings and review Extra restrictions on attempts. Password, network address, time window, and Safe Exam Browser fields each block access in different ways, so test with a student account before the exam opens.
