How the Moodle quiz check button works

Some Moodle quizzes show a Check button after every question, while others only reveal scores at the end. That difference comes from the question behaviour setting, and the moodle quiz check button is what lets students grade a single answer before submitting the whole attempt.

  • Immediate feedback: one attempt per question, with the Check button showing correctness right away.
  • Adaptive mode: students get hints and can retry, with a penalty for each extra attempt.
  • Interactive with multiple tries: students can retry after pressing Check, with feedback at each step.
  • General feedback in Moodle XML: the explanation students see after they check an answer.
Example Moodle quiz questions about the Check button
In Moodle, which question behaviour shows a Check button after each answer and gives feedback before the next question?Immediate feedback. It lets students check each response before moving on.
In Adaptive mode, what does a student receive after pressing Check on a wrong answer?A hint and another attempt, with a penalty for each retry. The penalty rewards getting it right on the first try.
Does Immediate feedback allow a second try after pressing Check? No. It allows one attempt per question, so Interactive with multiple tries is the option for retries.
Which Moodle XML element stores the feedback students see after submitting or checking a question? The generalfeedback element. It holds the explanation shown to students after they respond.
Where do you choose the question behaviour for a Moodle quiz?In the quiz settings, under the question behaviour section. The chosen behaviour decides whether a Check button appears.

Set the behaviour to Immediate feedback, Adaptive mode or Interactive with multiple tries in the quiz settings to see the Check button on those questions.

Frequently asked questions

Which Moodle question behaviour shows a Check button?

Immediate feedback, Adaptive mode and Interactive with multiple tries all show a Check button. You set this in the quiz settings under question behaviour.

How should I study from the feedback after pressing Check?

Read the explanation for every wrong answer and restate the rule in your own words before trying again. Retrying the same questions a day later helps the correct answers stick.

Does DeckOwl add a Check button to my Moodle course?

No. DeckOwl creates the questions and explanations, and the Check button comes from your Moodle quiz settings.

Can I export DeckOwl questions to Moodle?

Yes, Moodle XML export is available on the Pro plan. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.
