Turn your notes into a Moodle fill in the blank quiz
Upload lecture slides, PDFs or typed notes and get short-answer questions with explanations. Rewrite them as gap sentences and build the blanks in Moodle.
Writing fill-in-the-blank questions that test recall
Teachers and students who already have lecture slides or reading notes often want a Moodle quiz fill in the blank set without retyping every term by hand. DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes and photographed pages, then writes short-answer questions with explanations from that text, so each question tracks something you covered.
- Short-answer questions drawn directly from your slides or notes
- Explanations for each answer so wrong responses get feedback
- Flashcards with spaced repetition for the same key terms
- Moodle XML export for uploading to your course, available on Pro
Questions from your own material
Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or photos of pages. DeckOwl reads the text and writes questions about what you actually covered.
Explanations for every answer
Each short-answer question comes with an explanation, so learners see why the correct term fits the context.
Moodle XML export on Pro
The Pro plan exports Moodle XML and QTI 2.1, so generated questions can move into your course with fewer manual steps.
How it works
Upload your notes
Add slides, a PDF chapter or typed notes. Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition.
Generate short-answer questions
Choose the question type and count. Review the questions and keep the ones that test one key term.
Build the blanks in Moodle
Rewrite each kept question as a sentence with one gap, then add it in Moodle's cloze editor or export Moodle XML on Pro.
A fill-in-the-blank item works best when the gap targets one key term rather than a filler word. Ask whether the learner must recall the word, and keep the sentence short enough that only one answer fits. DeckOwl does not output Moodle's cloze type on its own, so the practical route is to take a generated question, rewrite it as a sentence with a gap, and build the blank in Moodle's cloze editor.

Frequently asked questions
How do I write a good fill-in-the-blank question for Moodle?
Blank one key term per sentence and keep the surrounding wording clear. Check that only one answer fits the context before you add the question to Moodle.
How many blanks should one question have?
One or two is usually enough for most courses. More gaps in one sentence make the item hard to score fairly and slow learners down.
Can I export my quiz to Moodle XML?
Yes, Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 export are on the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The Free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.
Is there a free plan to try it?
Yes, the Free plan includes 3 generations per month and in-browser study. No credit card is needed to start, and students get 40% off with a school email.
