How Moodle quiz navigation works

Most students first meet moodle quiz navigation during a timed test, when the question list and Next button are unfamiliar and the clock is running. Knowing the layout ahead of time removes that guesswork.

  • Free navigation lets you jump between any questions using the navigation block.
  • Sequential navigation allows only forward movement, one page at a time.
  • Flag a question to return to it later before you submit.
  • Select Finish attempt and confirm to submit, after checking for unanswered questions.
Example Moodle quiz navigation questions
In Moodle, what does sequential navigation prevent?Moving back to earlier pages after you advance. Sequential mode only lets you move forward, so earlier answers stay final.
What is the navigation block used for in a Moodle quiz?Numbered buttons for each question, showing progress at a glance. Use it to jump to questions you skipped.
What does flagging a question do in a Moodle quiz?It marks the question so you can find it again before submitting. The flag does not change your answer or your grade.
What should you check before clicking Finish attempt?Unanswered and flagged questions, shown in the navigation block. Submitting ends the attempt, so review first.
Which quiz setting controls whether students can return to earlier pages? The navigation method: Free allows returning to earlier pages, while Sequential does not. Your instructor sets this when creating the quiz.

Practice questions from your own notes

Upload a PDF, slides or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions with explanations.

Study in the browser first

The free plan includes 3 generations a month, so you can try a full quiz before deciding whether to upgrade.

Export to Moodle XML on Pro

The Pro plan adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export, so a quiz you build here can be imported into a course.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of a page.

Choose your question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions, then read the explanations for each answer.

Practice, then import

Study in the browser, or export to Moodle XML on Pro to set the quiz up in your course.

Two settings decide how you move around. In free navigation you can jump to any question from the navigation block, which shows numbered buttons for each question. In sequential navigation you move one page at a time and cannot return to earlier pages, so check which mode your instructor chose before you start.

Practice helps more than reading the layout alone. Working through a quiz built from your own lecture notes lets you test the same skills before the real one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move between questions in a Moodle quiz?

Can I export my practice quiz to Moodle?

Moodle XML export is included on the Pro plan, along with QTI 2.1 export. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.
