Set clear Moodle quiz overall feedback for every grade band
Overall feedback tells each student what their total score means and what to do next. DeckOwl drafts the quiz questions and explanations from your course material, so you can spend your time on the feedback itself.
Why overall feedback works better in bands
Good moodle quiz overall feedback gives each student one clear message based on their final score. In Moodle, you set grade boundaries as percentages of the maximum grade, and the message for the band a student lands in is shown after the attempt.
- Set at least three bands so a student who scored 90 percent does not get the same message as one who scored 40 percent.
- Name a concrete topic or chapter in lower-band feedback rather than writing only that the student should try again.
- Check that band boundaries match your pass mark before publishing the quiz to students.
- Re-read feedback after each term, because questions and lecture content change over time.
Questions from your material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or a photo of a page. Get multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions with explanations.
Feedback-ready question sets
Generate enough questions to cover each grade band you plan to write feedback for, so the score ranges you set have real results behind them.
Moodle XML export on Pro
The Pro plan exports questions as Moodle XML for import into your question bank. Overall feedback bands are set in the quiz settings in Moodle.
How it works
Upload your course material
Add the lecture slides, chapter PDF or notes the quiz should test. Text is read from images of pages too.
Generate and review questions
DeckOwl produces questions with explanations. Check accuracy and remove anything that does not match what you taught.
Write overall feedback by band
In Moodle, open the quiz settings, add grade boundaries and write one message for each band, naming the topics to review at the lower end.
Bands only help if the questions behind them measure the right skills. A quiz that mixes recall and application items will separate students more usefully, so the feedback for a middle band can point to the specific concept that caused most of the lost marks.
Keep each message short and actionable. Name the topics to revisit for lower bands and suggest a next challenge for higher ones.

Frequently asked questions
How many grade bands should overall feedback use in a Moodle quiz?
Three to five bands usually cover the range well: a lower band for students who need to rebuild basics, a middle band for partial mastery, and a top band for students ready to extend. Fewer bands can make feedback too generic to act on.
How many practice questions should a quiz have before writing band feedback?
Aim for enough questions that each band reflects a real difference in performance, often 10 to 20 for a short quiz. Check that questions cover the main topics so a score means something specific.
Does DeckOwl write the overall feedback for me?
DeckOwl generates the questions and per-question explanations from your material, and you write the band messages in Moodle so they match your course. Exports to Moodle XML are included on the Pro plan.
Is there a free way to try generating questions?
The Free plan includes 3 generations per month with study in the browser. PDF and DOCX export start on Plus at $39 per year or $7.99 per month, and students with a school email get 40 percent off.
