Review your Moodle quiz preview before students ever see it
Upload a PDF, slides or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations. Read them as a student would, then export Moodle XML.
Why preview a quiz before it goes live
Before a class sees a new quiz, a Moodle quiz preview is the chance to read every question as a student would. Wording errors, unclear options and answers that do not match the lesson are easier to catch at this stage.
- Check that each correct answer matches the source material.
- Read the explanation for every question before it reaches students.
- Remove or rewrite any question that tests a detail you did not teach.
- Export Moodle XML only after the question set reads cleanly.
Questions from your own material
Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages. Each question is written from the content you provide.
Explanations for every answer
Each multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer question includes an explanation, so you can check the reasoning before you publish.
Moodle XML export on Pro
The Pro plan exports Moodle XML and QTI 2.1, so the questions can move into your Moodle course for a final preview there.
How it works
Upload your notes or slides
Add the PDF, DOCX, PPTX or text file for the unit you are teaching.
Choose the question types
Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions and generate a set from your material.
Preview and export
Read each question and explanation, edit as needed, then export Moodle XML on the Pro plan.
Writing a full question bank by hand takes hours, and reviewing it often gets rushed. Generating questions from the same slides or notes your students use keeps the quiz tied to what was actually taught.
DeckOwl does not replace your Moodle course settings. It gives you a set of questions and explanations to review, and you decide what goes into the quiz.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use the preview option to check a Moodle quiz?
In Moodle, open the quiz and select Preview to attempt it as a student without it affecting the gradebook. Doing this after importing your questions shows how they appear in the course.
Do preview attempts count toward a Moodle quiz grade?
No. Preview attempts are not recorded in the gradebook and do not use up the attempt limit for students.
Can I export questions to Moodle XML?
Yes, Moodle XML export is part of the Pro plan, which costs $14.99 per month. The free plan lets you study generated questions in the browser but does not include exports.
Is there a free plan?
Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. No credit card is needed to start.
