How multiple choice questions work

A multiple choice question has three parts: a stem that poses the problem, one correct answer, and several distractors, which are plausible wrong options. Students choose the best answer from the list, which makes the format quick to grade and useful for checking recall and comparison.

  • Stem: the question or incomplete statement the student reads first.
  • Correct answer: exactly one option that is clearly supported by the source material.
  • Distractors: plausible wrong options built from common misconceptions.
  • Explanation: a short reason the right answer is right, which turns a guess into a lesson.
Example multiple choice questions on chemical bonding
Which bond forms when two nonmetal atoms share electrons? A) Ionic B) Covalent C) Metallic D) HydrogenB) Covalent. Nonmetals share electrons rather than transferring them fully, so the atoms are held together by shared pairs.
Which compound is most likely ionic? A) CO2 B) NaCl C) CH4 D) H2OB) NaCl. Sodium is a metal and chlorine is a nonmetal, so electrons transfer and the resulting ions attract each other.
What determines whether a covalent bond is polar? A) Atomic mass B) Difference in electronegativity C) Number of protons D) Bond lengthB) Difference in electronegativity. Unequal sharing of electrons creates partial charges when one atom attracts electrons more strongly.
Which property is typical of metallic bonding? A) Brittle crystals B) Delocalized electrons that conduct electricity C) Low melting points D) Electrons fixed between two atomsB) Delocalized electrons that conduct electricity. The mobile electron sea lets metals carry current and deform without shattering.
Why is the bond angle in water smaller than 109.5 degrees? A) Oxygen has two lone pairs that repel the bonding pairs B) Hydrogen atoms are too large C) Water has a triple bond D) Oxygen has no valence electronsA) Oxygen has two lone pairs that repel the bonding pairs. Lone pairs take up more space than bonding pairs, which pushes the H-O-H angle to about 104.5 degrees.

Multiple choice, true/false and short answer

Generate the question types you need from one upload, each with an explanation for the correct answer.

Upload what you already have

Works with PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text and photos of pages, which are read with text recognition.

Export where you need it

Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export. Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for learning management systems.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of your pages.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer questions for your topic.

Review and study

Check each explanation, then study in the browser or export if you are on a paid plan.

Good distractors reflect common mistakes, such as confusing ionic and covalent bonds, so a wrong choice shows where understanding breaks down. Writing one well takes care: keep options similar in length, avoid filler like all of the above, and make sure exactly one answer is clearly defensible.

If you already have lecture slides or a chapter PDF, DeckOwl can draft multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions from that material, each with an explanation. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. Plus adds unlimited generations and PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export.

Frequently asked questions

How many answer choices should a multiple choice question have?

Four choices is the most common format, though three works well for simpler recall. Keep the number consistent across a quiz so the format stays predictable.

How do I study chemical bonding with multiple choice questions?

Answer each question before reading the options, then write one sentence explaining why each wrong choice is wrong. Focus on the differences between ionic, covalent and metallic bonds, since many questions test that contrast.

Can DeckOwl export multiple choice questions to Moodle?

Moodle XML export is included on the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The Plus plan, at $39 per year or $7.99 per month, includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Is there a free plan to try it?

Yes, the free plan allows 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Exports are not included on the free plan.
