Why the import fails and what to do next

An Anki deck not importing usually comes down to the file itself: a format Anki does not recognize, a version mismatch between the export and your Anki install, or media files that did not travel with the deck. Checking those three things is a reasonable first step, but if the original file is corrupted or you need cards for tomorrow's exam, starting over from your own material is faster.

  • Confirm the file is a valid Anki package or a properly formatted text file with consistent separators
  • Check that your Anki version is recent enough to read the export you received
  • Keep media files alongside the deck when you move it between computers
  • Regenerate cards from the original PDF or notes if the same file keeps failing to import
Example anatomy flashcards (general study topic)
What is the function of the sinoatrial node?It sets the heart's resting rhythm by generating electrical impulses, acting as the heart's natural pacemaker.
Which bone is the longest in the human body? The femur, or thigh bone.
How do arteries differ from veins?Arteries carry blood away from the heart, while veins carry blood back toward it.
What does the diaphragm do during inhalation? It contracts and flattens, enlarging the chest cavity so air flows into the lungs.
Where is the hippocampus located? In the medial temporal lobe, where it supports forming new memories.

Built on your material

Start from the PDFs, DOCX and PPTX files, plain notes or photos of pages you already have, so the cards match what your class actually covers.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back at growing intervals, so you review each one just before you would forget it instead of cramming the night before.

Anki export on Plus

Plus includes Anki export along with PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slide deck, set of notes or a photo of a page. Text in images is read with text recognition.

Generate and review

Get flashcards, quizzes and mind maps from the material, then edit anything that does not match your course.

Export to Anki

On Plus, export the cards to Anki and keep studying with spaced repetition wherever you prefer.

DeckOwl takes a different route. You upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain notes, or photos of pages, and it produces flashcards with spaced repetition, plus quizzes and mind maps. Study in the browser is included on the free plan with 3 generations per month; Anki export is available on Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make from one chapter?

Aim for one fact per card so each review is quick and clear. A dense chapter usually needs several focused cards rather than a few long ones.

What makes spaced repetition work for memorization?

It shows cards again at growing intervals, so you review items just before you would forget them. Short, regular sessions work better than one long cram.

Can I export DeckOwl flashcards to Anki?

Yes, on the Plus plan, which is $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Will DeckOwl repair my existing Anki deck?

No. DeckOwl creates new flashcards from your source material rather than fixing an existing Anki file, so you can start fresh from your PDFs or notes.
